Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Hey all!

I'm fairly new to these forums and have been searching for information on getting a license in order to have my own GMRS repeater. I understand that GMRS is now license exempt for devices under 2 watts however repeaters are still not permitted.

I'm assuming to run a GMRS repeater this would require a license. I've checked the Canadian regulations on the website but no where does it mention where I could attempt the necessary license or permit to operate a GMRS repeater.

Has anyone gone through this process and give me some pointers on how I can accomplish this?

Thanks!

GMRS is not and has not been exempt from ANY licensing, not matter the wattage.

Any GMRS use requires a License From the FCC

Now Canadian Rule might vary, so Please update your profile to include your location.

Going to post this anway, since it took to Paragraph 2 to find out our might be in Canada

I originally posted in the Canadian section of this forums. I'm located in Montreal, Canada where GMRS license is not required. There are regulations that state that devices may not output power over 2watts as mentioned.

I assuming that you can still get a license or a commercial permit to transmit over the 2watt limit and also have a repeater however I'm having a hard time finding information on this.

Was hoping that someone from Canada who has gone through this process would be able to provide me with some additional information related to this.

Thanks for your quick reply ecps92!

GMRS is restricted to 2 watts and simplex operation only in Canada.

If you want to user higher power and a repeater, you'll need to apply for a commercial licence.

Last I heard, GMRS repeaters are not permitted in Canada:

From: https://www.ic.gc.ca/eic/site/smt-gst.nsf/eng/sf09104.html (Section 4.1)

"At this time, the use of GMRS repeaters to further extend the coverage of GMRS communications and devices that exceed 2 watts ERP, will not be permitted. The main reason is to facilitate the migration of land mobile users to other frequencies before GMRS repeaters and higher powered devices are given further consideration".

(This is from 2011.. I've never been able to find anything newer).

Hey Mike,

I'm very aware of the license free limits to 2 watts and simply operations only. If I wanted to apply for a commercial license where would one apply for such license?

I've search the governments website and googled for these answers but they all lead to not be permitted.

I see many businesses who clearly have a repeater system on top of their offices (thing school bus HQ, city workers, etc.)

I'm trying to figure out what license they are using to be legal.

Hopefully someone could help me out with this.

Thanks!
