Do you have a good recomendation for a scanner to pick up police and fire in Mongomery County Maryland, not sure if I need a 200 or 500 dollar investment

Your only limited to 4 choices because of the digital systems around the county. BCD396t, BCD996, PRO96 or the PrRO2096. Montgomery, howard, WashDC, Fairfax, Loudon, Alexandria, and soon to be Arlington are digital, so it limits your choices in units to those 4. Now for which one to pick you must decide.

However from the description for this forum shown above every post:

Location specific posts should be directed to the regional forums listed below.

Indeed welcome! The Maryland folks are quite knowledgeable. It would be wise to avoid the 1st generation 785D / 250D scanners as they will not handle reallocation coming to a theater near you soon.

It blows 'cause I got 3 of 'em!

First may I ask are you looking for something portable, hardwired in the car or a base station at home? Do you want to listen to just Montgomery Co or do you expect a broader area of interest?

There are good choices for each answer.

I highly recommend the pro 96 and/or the pro 2096. Use Don Starr's win96 to program it. http://www.starrsoft.com/ Couldn't be easier!

I work for Montgomery County (right across the street from the Countys radio shop) and have absolutely no complaints about these two Radio Shack (GRE) models.

Whatever drawbacks there are (no ltr) to these scanners are far out weighed by the multiple configurations it can hold and the ease of programming, thanks to Don's win96.
