Well, I bit the bullet and picked up a PSR-600 yesterday. I have to say I DO NOT like the interface on this scanner. I am used to the Uniden's and I am Pro-Uniden when it comes to menu functionality. The trunking portion (programming and functionality) is a little "out there" and its going to take some time getting used to it.

In comparison, my 996 is missing lots of traffic on the MCSO TRS system in Arizona, even after many adjustments (i hope the next Uniden update resolves this). My 600 is picking up traffic on every transmission and the 996 is just sitting there (its been doing that since the last firmware upgrade, picks up about only 80% of the time). The digital decoding is much better on the GRE, so far that I notice, although its only been in my hands for 24hrs. One thing that I have noticed also is the squelch tail elimination is just outstanding and is a major plus for me.

For those of you that have the 996 and 600, have you noticed the missed traffic on the 996 compared to your 600 on mixed mode MOT systems.

They both have their pros and cons, I am done rambling now.

I have not noticed a problem with missed traffic on the 996. My experience has been that the PSR-500 that I have performs somewhat better on our statewide system in Ohio. I hate the interface on the PSR-500 as well but have gotten used to it. The PSRs definitely have their pluses and I'm happy with mine.

The 996 is still a fine scanner and one I'm considering purchasing again, likely after the firmware update for it comes out - which should be soon according to the Product Manager, who happens to be a member of these forums.

Do me a favor - scan your VHF ~ 150 - ~174 mhz - with the attenuator OFF (and an external ant if you have one). I'm curious to see if you notice problems with frontend overload and intermod. That's one thing to watch out for on these beasts - they are more sensitive than a 996... but if you live in a strong RF environment, it could be troublesome.

I am rural, about 50 miles from the closest city (Phoenix) so I don't have to much of a problem with intermod and overload. I do have problems with it picking up some interference around other electronics. It seems worse on my 600 than any of my Unidens. I can actually watch it pause on VHF channels as its scanning. I have always had this problem with GRE based scanners though, Pro-92, Pro-2067, and Pro-2096.

I know what you mean. Just give it some time. The last Uniden I bought was a BC780xlt. I still love it. Since then I have bought a Pro 95, 97 (bought because they were deeply discounted) and now a PSR-500. All outstanding scanners. I bought the 500 over the Uniden basically because what you are saying about the performance.

Just give the PSR menu some time and work with it. It'll make some more since. But I do like Uniden's menus.
