This would sure cut into railfanning some too. Some say it's bad now, but this...
Thanks for the link. Think I'll pass it over to the Railroad Forums site too.

Good luck... So a train stops for a crew change in the middle of nowhere for a couple hours... What will they do? Put a chain link fence around each tank car? Seems kind of like a band-aide to me. I'm not sure there's anything you can do to lower the danger a significant amount.

Always funny to see a bill proposed by a bunch of politicians that know nothing about railroads or railroad operations.

This might explain why some digital systems are showing up in the railroads.

I have the supposed new band plan listed on my site. Trunking is reported to play a fairly heavy role when things get all ironed out. When all this will happen is anybody's guess. But it will probably take a long time. It might offer more to hear or less... I think it's still all up in the air for now. DS and trains through trunking won't be the same though.

Trunking? Nationwide? I think it's a yard issue--there are thousands of remote bases and let's not forget what will probably happen first, narrowbanding in the 12.5khz step will add twice as many freqs which is already allocated. It seems to be taking awhile to get 800 rebanding started, like HDTV, and the folly of post 9-11 money to first responders, so I wouldn't be too worried. If it's a mandate that is not funded, then the RR's are not going to play ball as easily. Maybe I didn't read it correctly, I didn't see anything in the article about communications. I thnk trying to hide trains is like the MX missle project that was glorified on the front page of Popular Science 25 or so years ago, as if. We all knew days in advance when the "white trains" came through years ago with missiles heading for Bangor Sub Base.

Well we do know that digital comms are becomming more common in rr coms.. and that TRS's are being installed in a lot of yards.. and I have read an internal memo on a trackside trs, digital with encryption for security for at least one main line.... But the digital is to be fully emplemented on three main carriers by 2012 at the latest. The trackside TRS plan in the memo is to be studied for feasability and if its workable, to be set up and online by 2010. I also heard a lil chatter about a short line going to satnet... But the price is wayyy up there.. So rail monitoring will be going digital in more places very soon... as for the rest... It will be a while. Happy hearing!:)

Their lack of knowledge may not be limited to railroad ops.

Most gumshoes know who their railfans are and we leave em alone so long as they aren't being idiots out there. The only time I talk to a railfan is if I don't know them and just to say hello. I like most enjoy having additional eyes and ears on the line. I usually hand out my card to those I know so they can call me right away if they see something that warrants immediate attention. Of course I'm sure there are others out there that are less then friendly, but I'm not going to commet on those folks here :)

You must not work for the Nazi Southern! You've got the attitude that all LEO should have. I've heard nothing but horror stories on the NS... glad I railfan in the boonies. Closest I get to a major area is Harrisburg.

Sooner or later these f***s are gonna criminalize photography, I see it coming. I'll spare you a political tirade!

Just to let you know I'm genuine: http://www.railpictures.net/showphotos.php?userid=4208 , go enjoy!

Glad the MRL in the boonies of MT are railfan friendly, Just don't tresspass on to the track area. Really neat seeing lots of freight going to and from Seattle. The statewide LE digital system is taking forever to come on line. Hope rail TRS takes forever.

Hmm Austin MT, BN train #123, Summer of 91' , I got a cab ride in the rear consist of a 3 unit MRL mid-train helper, the engine shut down in the tunnel and the alarms went off as well. Kinda smoky but we survived. The only thing new about the engine was the paint.
