Just ordered the "garmin 18pc" and was wondering if anyone else has this unit and if you are satisfied with it. I really don't even know exactly what a gps unit does, just a general idea. But anyway.

Thanks

Just wondering if I am going to recieve everthing i need to get started. I odered the Garmin 18 pc unit with the "North American deluxe Package", from "provantage". I should have done research on it before I ordered it as Dubbin suggested, but I have a history of doing things "Bass ackwards".

You didn't need the software for the 996, but it is a good deal anyway. Now you can buy a GPS-18USB without the software for $67 and use it on a laptop :D

Mounting of GPS 18pc?

Hi,

I'm saving up for a BCD996T, and a gps unit to go withit. I'm finding that the gps 18c might be a good fit.

1. I'd like a gps that is mounted semi permanently in/on the car.
2. It should be discrete enough from curious eyes or theives.

THe BCD996T will fit inside the center compartment that sits between both front seats of my car. It will stay hidden from view whenever the lid is closed.

Just curious to know how all of you have mounted the 18pc.

Also as a side question....is the location information of a "radio system" contained in the 18pc or in the BCD996T? Guess what I'm asking is whether I need to program the 18pc itself with waypoints of the radio system using Garmin's software.

You dont program the GPS18pc to use with a scanner. it talks the same "language" as the radio needs.
If you use a GPS18 USB or GPS18 bare cable model you can specify another "Garmin" format. The GPS18 has a magnetic base, but I have mounted many of them on 18 wheelers by using a 3/4" minerallac type pipe hanger that fits perfectly on the top side of the mirror brackets. There is a threaded hole on the bottom of the GPS18 and the screw that fits it is in the package with the suction cup mount. Use that to mount it to whatever you want. It is a small metric screw, so be careful if you get another one that it is not too long.
Then I use a 1/4-20 x1'' security type bolt to mount the minerallac hanger on the mirror bracket just to slow down any thieves. Those trucking companies get pissed when people like me drill holes in their new Freightliners and Volvos. ;)

Yep, you are right; I was just trying to explain the differences in the models of GPS18's. The USB models only work with USB ports, of course--

I just wanted to make that clear since you said "If you use a GPS18 USB or GPS18". I'm guessing that you can see where I'm coming from on that one.
