I noticed in the classified that you can get an internal GPS for the SDS 100. Would I have to send my scanner away and how long would it be gone, approx. time in weeks. Also I don't travel much but when I do would the GPS program the scanner as to where you are? Why couldn't you just put in a new zip address, would you get the same frequencies. You could, periodically, update the zip code in your scanner, and mimic, in part, the function of the GPS. However, depending on how often you did that, as well as the range you used. you may miss some things you want, and keep hearing others that are behind you, instead of what's ahead. Using the main database and a GPS, the scanner will enable, or disable, systems as they come into, or pass out of range. So, even if you were in an area unfamiliar to you, as long as you had an updated database in the scanner, your unit would hear what is in your vicinity.

See this page for more details on how location works.

If you wanted to have an internal GPS installed, you would need to send the scanner to Jon. Contact him directly to find out what the turnaround time would be. https://forums.radioreference.com/members/jonwienke.820387/

Current turnaround for an internal install is about a month.
Okay thank you for replying, I noticed you were the guy to talk too. I live in Ontario, Canada, don't know if that changes things. I was also wondering if a handheld GPS like a Garmin is compatible with the scanner and how?

If you like your own programming, like I do, and you travel even within a 20 - 30 mile radius, the internal GPS is very useful.

Not interested in entering a zip code, pressing a QK, the GPS handles everything for me. Best thing that has happened to these scanners in years. (Really, the only thing that has happened with them in a couple of years :p)

You won't be disappointed. He does great work.

I have Jon's internal GPS and it works flawlessly. When I travel, I'm usually alone. Besides being convenient, it's safety factor.

Disclaimer: Other than being a customer, I'm not otherwise affiliated with Jon.
