Ok, I give up.

Unit works fine on alkalines in the black non-charging holder.

if i plug the AC adapter into the wall outlet, then into the scanner, it powers off immediately.

if i plug the AC adapter into the radio, then plug into the wall outlet, the radio shuts off.

any ideas?

thanks

Is it an AC adapter that you can change the polarity of the plug? It sounds like you either have to much power going into it, or the wrong tip polarity... What kind of adapter you have and what are the power specs on it?

Do you get any power indication when you plug in the adapter plug into the radio? The power jack on the 106/500 is a break before make connector. That means it disconnects the batteries before making an adapter power connection. This of course shows up when the radio is on and running when you plug in the adapter. You should see the warning message that low batteries have been detected and the radio stops but shows that display. A simple power down then up of the radio restores it.

If that's not the case, i.e., the radio just goes dead, then you have an adapter problem. If you have a volt ohm meter, you'll have to measure it to see if it's putting anything out. The fact that you have the factory adapter says that everything else, tip size, polarity, proper voltage rating, etc., is a non-issue. Just the DC output of the adapter may not be there.

It may be the power jack going into the unit. I had problems with the dc car adapter and now I am having trouble with the AC adapter plug that goes in the unit. I ended up putting a new plug on the dc adaptor that was a nice secure fit. I purchased it from cables and connectors which is fairly local to me.
I will change out the plug on my ac wall wart myself. I got so disgusted with gre customer service after they wanted to charge me to repair the dc adapter that my next radio will not be a GRE unit. I can't understand why make an expensive radio and sell you junk for accessories and then not support them.

I bought a 300 about a year ago, it came with a bad charger, they wanted me to pay to ship it back to test it , i assured them that i was capable and it was bad. I just bought another so not to mess with the shipping hassle, the new one lasted 3 days so i gave up and went to the shack and bought one, this one has developed an interm. open circuit, made by Gre as well I'm sure. I just keep 2 sets of rechargables in a wall charger now. No prboblimo>>>>>>>>

The reason for my question was that if you have the scanner turned on and attempt to plug in the power supply, it kills the scanner until you cycle the power. You can use any 9v wall wart as long as the tip is properly polarized. I have a Pro97 with a wall wart and it will operate my PSR 500 as well.

Just a thought.
