I went to a hamfest in Belton, Texas last Saturday. Huge crowd and tons of vendors. Inside spaces sold out. And outside tailgate slots all full.
I sold everything I took to the sale. ( had Inside tables) While walking around looking at all the goodies for sale, I ran across a ham selling a Uniden 780xlt. He had the manual, A/C wall wart, mobile mounting bracket and a DC cable. He had it marked $30.00! I asked if it worked. He said it did. But, if I lived in an area with a lot of digital systems, it would be useless. I asked how it did on Airband. He said he thought it did good.
So, I offered $25.00 and he took it! I just tested it out. It completely blows away my Icom 5100a, Uniden 536, 436 SDS100, and SDS200 on Airband. Scan speed is amazing. And the audio is clear as can be. Background noise is almost nonexistent.
I had thought some of the posts about the quality of this radio on Airband may not be fair comparisons. I was completely wrong in that assumption! For an older design, this radio is fantastic.
Just thought I would share my bargain of the weekend.

+1...I keep a 780xlt full of pre-programmed air frequencies scanning all the time. Another for 144-148 ham stuff! Even with an indoor antenna it receives exceptionally well on air. Now I wish I had not gotten rid of my 785.
Glad to hear Belton was a success...I went for years, but am currently working weekends, so no go! Maybe next spring!!!!

I wasn't sure how attendance would be. I was at the Spring Belton hamfest last year and very few people showed up. A friend and I have been attending Belton for many years. And usually, we bring stuff to sell or trade. It's been a long time since I have sold everything I brought like this time. Besides tbe 780xlt I also bought a Kenwood TS-950SD for a good price. And it works quite well.
Prices for most things was really reasonable. I figured people would be trying to sell at higher prices like they are online. But, that wasn't the case at all. Lots of good equipment at more than fair prices.
Looking forward to going again.

I find the Service scan to be good. But, I don't see how to do a quick scan of MilAir.
Do I need to manually set the lower and upper limits or can I use one of the preset Service scans?

Trucker700. I do my scans in band segments on the 780XLT. Break the band up into chunks and let it go for a few days. By the way, Proscan is one of of a very small segment of programming software that still can program and control the 780XLT. Because of its versatility with other Uniden products, I highly recommend it. It controls my 780XLT used to monitor O'Hare airport and any Milair that stumbles my way.
