Live in Virginia Beach area and have been out of the game for some time. Is it worth getting back into scanning as I am hearing everything is now encrypted?
Certainly do not want to spend the money on a new radio to only be able to listen to my local Wendy's drive up window,

I think Wendy's might have gone to encrypted DMR last year :LOL:

Most of Newport News PD is encrypted, Portsmouth PD is next.

I made an updated list of confirmed encrypted agencies in va, if anyone has any more lmk and I'll add it. I'll add Newport News to it, I heard Lee County might be encrypted but the DB says no, if anyone is in that area or knows for sure lmk. The most common algorithm I'm finding so far is P25 ADP or NXDN scrambling, typically only the special operations radios have AES crypto boards installed, but it depends on the radio shop

I don't understand what "Encrypted" means. Does that mean you can't listen to them at all or that you just need a specific kind of scanner to listen? I was considering buying a scanner but if I can't listen to most of what I want to listen to like Police, Fire, military, Airplanes etc. in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia. Id hate tp spend $400-$700 for a plastic brick that's only good for listening to taxi cabs.

It means scanners can’t pick them up at all. You can still listen to Fire/EMS so it’s not a total loss

Thank you. I am just now wanting to get back into scanning myself. I live in Norfolk and just don't want to spend a ton of money on a new scanner if I can't monitor Police, Fire, Coast Guard and the like if it's all encrypted. I was thinking about buying a Uniden SDS100. I'm sure there is some pretty cool stuff to monitor but those are my main interests.

I've been hearing "Portsmouth is going encrypted this year" since 2018. Less talk, more actions because it sounds like pure speculation that's pushed by someone every year.
Well that didn't age well. Portsmouth PD is now fully encrypted. STARS is next in 2024 and Norfolk PD is the next few years.
