Harnett County

I used to be able to get Harnett County on my 325p2. I have had my SDS100 since Oct.'23, and 436HP since Dec.'22. I can't get Harnett County on either of them. Even though, according to this: VIPER in NC, it says the county is 100% VIPER.

Any ideas?
TIA

closest site set up ?
The closest towers are Cokesbury, and Broadway. I am putting everything else but my local county, and Harnett(neighboring county), on 'Avoid'. to figure this out.

Here are some thoughts.....

Did you duplicate the programming from your 325p2 that received Harnett County into the sds100/bcd436? (Same sites, same talkgroups?)

The closest towers are Cokesbury, and Broadway.
Have you confirmed that you are receiving the control channels for these sites? (You can use the analyze function, hold on the site, etc)

Do you have Location Control enabled for the favorite list containing Harnett County? If "yes", make sure you have the range set large enough to reach from your location into the adjacent county. (You may want to disable location control if enabled)

Originally, I did.

by the map, you are out of range, so it is all iffy for reception.

It would seem like that, but. Going to Google Maps, and looking at the tower signal radius maps. That doesn't end up being the case, sometimes. I can get Cary/Wake25(Raleigh is 43mi. from my house), and Granville County(49mi. from my house)fine on my SDS100. Why do I want to listen to neighboring counties, because of the potential of 'lone wolves' in the present present political climate. I only have Lee County on my 436Hp, because I got the NXDN on that scanner. Any Simulcast systems that don't have non-Simulcast frequencfies as an alternative, i only have on my SDS100.

it is nice to be prepared, but radio reception is never guaranteed.
i can get a tampa bay electric company at over 100 miles away, the county next to me is 15 miles away and i can not hear it.

I set the Squelch at 5, so I could get more than just my neighboring counties.

Why stop at 5? Why not 10? You see, most RR blokes stop their squelch at 10. If I need that extra push over the cliff, I put it up to 11. It's one louder and I can hear statewide.

Pretty sure the range rings are for intended area of operation and not reception. Also, that info is user submitted and may not always be that accurate. If you get something one day and not the next it could be a reception related.

What is the antenna situation on these scanners? Combined or seperate?

Cokesbury license was cancelled in 2014. Have you ever picked up that site or verified those freqs are still active?

I am not from the area but doing a quick radius search around Harnett County (4 mile radius) only pulled up Lillington site WQSU555

The listing in Radio Reference database for Cokesbury (cancelled) WQCZ372 show 700mhz freqs.

The FCC license for Cokesbury shows 800 mhz freqs, not 700.

Using antenna search.com for the location listed on the cancelled license brings up

Wqcz372 with 800 freqs

i see you have the squelch idea backward.
if set to the minimum of 2 you will get everybody.
if you set it to 15 you get nobody, OK actually really close or powerful transmitters.
so set the squelch to 2.

I was thinking the same thing. When I saw squelch set that high and suggestions to go higher, I thought “Wait a minute, mine is set at 2. Do I have it backwards?” Also, I’m in Michigan and travel daily with the GPS feature running. I’ve found that with so many simulcast systems running, it seems that depending on which control channel a particular agency is using, it may be possible to pick up a department several counties away because the county I’m in or a county in between have overlap of frequencies. For example, if I’m in Montcalm County but happen to be in range of a Kent County site, I may pick up Allegan County through the Kent simulcast system. However, on other occasions I will be in the northern part of Allegan County but pulling from a closer Kent County site and not get Allegan at all. This can happen on both my SDS100 and my Unication G5. The only theory that I can come up with is that one of the department’s primary control channels has changed to an alternate, thereby not “hearing” the other department. If someone can confirm or deny my theory, I’d appreciate it.

or add in the FM capture effect.
with FM the radio only hears the strongest signal.
that is one reason that air stuff is in AM, you can hear both at the same time or at least know that there is a separate transmission.
and that can save lives.
and simulcast has a problem with being to hear two or more towers as they hit your radio a little out of phase and add and subtract the signal.
so many radios just go silent or you get garbage. (except for the SDS uniden radios that use a computer to 'figure out the right signal'.
so as you drive and your primary system fades out, the radio will then scan through to find where it might have gone and could then find another frequency from your system that is another system's control channel.

I pick up the cokesbury tower on my G5, I work in Harnett as far I know it's still active, it's one of the towers programmed in my pager... although I don't think the erwin tower is used
