Hard to tell from the PDF if it is a P25 variant or similar to "old" OpenSky.

The only way junk like "old" OpenSky is "fully interoperable" is if everyone is using that same brand of junk, or cross-patching (kludging) is done.

Kludging is never kludging if the manufacturer says it has to happen.

Then it is a feature.

I'm sure the emergency responders who come into a city on mutual aid but can't talk on the radio system because the city council chose a whacked-out proprietary protocol over a standards-based system don't consider it a 'feature'.

OpenSky2™, the next generation of the company’s proven digital voice and data communications network.

The problem is that they didn't say what OpenSky was "proven" to accomplish. From many press reports it appears to be "proven" to not work as sold as well as "proven" to generate lots of work for lawyers. Makes one wonder if OpenSky2 is the version that actually works, or simply slapping the "New and Improved" label on the same old crappy stuff while putting it into a newly designed package. It would be nice if we could see some of the technical details and not just the fluff from the marketing department.

Found this on this site: WI Fire Feeds.com - Broadcasting Wisconsin Public Safety to the World!
.
This is your website, please contact MKE SCAN if you have additional features you would like to see added. If you would like to add your feed to this site, we would be happy to include it. Setting up a feed is fairly easy to do. Click on the "How-To" link on the menu section to walk you through the process. In 2009 we would like to have feeds for the following areas: Wausau / Stevens Point, Superior, All the State Patrol Districts, All major Wisconsin Airports (MKE, MSN, GRB, LSE, EAU) and the City of Milwaukee Police (including the new OpenSKY system).
I know its a year old but thought it was funny they have OpenSky in there.

Does this mean Harris admits the audio on OpenSky sucks

". Advanced Digital Audio Features
OpenSky2 provides a significant improvement in overall voice quality as well as background noise suppression and enhanced dynamic range. The OpenSky2 enhanced AMBE Vocoder provides radio users with 40 different volume settings that can be adjusted to balance the requirements of users with the ambient noise challenges of the surrounding environment. In addition, the My Audio equalizer setting enables agencies to customize and balance audio device levels across an entire system. Especially useful in high noise environments, system administrators can customize the sound levels based on who uses the radio and where they are deployed. "

They should rename these systems to OpenWallet.

I'm surprised that Harris lends their name to this garbage --- their military radios are pretty good, although very high-priced.
