I had to go to the Miami Airport early this morning, & I took my MRK with me to listen to the county. I've had this radio over 15 years, & it still worked. I'm not familiar with how the Ericsson system will be affected by rebanding. Will the radio be scrap after rebanding like non flashport Motorola radios, or will it continue to work? Thanks GARY N4KVE

Miami Dade is moving to APCO25 with a new system and will be encrypting their public safety traffic.
And no they have not rebanded yet and your radio will no longer operate once they switch.

Miami Herald Article

Hey,

My name is Garett, and I'm a reporter with The Miami Herald. We're writing an article about how Miami police departments will be begin encrypting their radio scanners, and we were hoping to ask some local operators how it will be affecting them. My e mail is gfranklyn@miamiherald.com, and my number is 305-376-4914. I'd appreciate any information.

Thanks,

Garett

Is it just the agencies that are currently on the Miami-Dade EDACS system or are several area systems being replaced with one? As a frequent visitor to Miami Beach, I would hate to see them go 100% encrypted.

As far as I can tell it will just be the ones on the Miami-Dade EDACS because that is all Sprint will pay for with rebanding. Now I'm sure others are free to join after the fact, but who know's who that will be.

That's actually not the new system but instead a test system. They sometimes simulcast traffic from their EDACS system but only for testing.

Harris Communication Tech has told me the new system will be Digital voice and will encrypt only for SRT and by "on demand". So your top of the line new scanner will be able to monitor.

Harris comm tech isn't going to manage the system and you can bet once the brass figures out that they can't be monitored, what might be thought as "on demand" will become "full time demand."

Oh and my previous information is from someone a lot higher up the chain than the vendor's technician.
