Has anyone here ever replaced the LCD display of a hand-held scanner? My brother stepped on mine and the LCD display is mostly non-functional. (It's a Radio Shack PRO-97.)

I can get the replacement display from Radio Shack for $23.49, and I do have experience working on circuit boards -- although I'd be more comforatable if this is just a matter of plugging a ribbon cable into a socket.

Has anyone done this before -- either with the PRO-97, or with another scanner manufactured by GRE?

Can anyone offer any useful guidance as to what goes into opening the scanner replacing the display?

Thanks very much!

How bout taking it to radioshack and having them fix it? I have heard many stories of people messing with the LCD and messing it as it is pretty hard to do and you have to be pretty techy.

I did this with a Pro-50 several years ago, and it was as fordcobra04 said. Not sure if this is how the newer models work or not.

Good luck!

Yes, I broke the LCD on my Pro96. Replacing it was a breeze. It is just a ribbon cable that connects into the board.

User serviceable parts ...

I have had each of my scanners fully apart; but then this type of thing is not new to me. I am a product designer. Generally speaking, this is not something I'd suggest you do on your own. Look at it this way - assume you try to perform the replacement and something goes wrong or it doesn't work. Are you willing to live with that and/or possibly have to replace the entire scanner?

I dropped my PRO-94A a few weeks ago, very low audio after that. Went to Radio Shack to inquire about repairs. Cost for a programable scanner was $49 plus shipping both ways +parts. They ask for a maximum amount that you are willing to pay. If needed repair is within that price range repair will be made. If estimate exceeds the amount they will have store advise you of cost. If you decide not to have it repaired, the $49. + shipping is not refundable

I replaced a broken LCD display on an old PRO-3? scanner 5 years ago. The new LCD costed $20 and had adhesive on one side where you pop/pry the old display out and press in the new one. The only issue was realigning the new display so that the metal contacts were in the correct place. Removing the hardware in order to access the display took more time than the LCD removal/replacement.
