At approximately 1:15pm, on Saturday, December 4, 2010, the fiber optics lines for 911 service to Hays and Caldwell counties as well as the Cities of San Marcos and Kyle were severed and 911 service as well as some administrative service is not available. Citizens in need of emergency service should check by their nearest fire station where information can be sent to the respective emergency service.

UPDATE: Leroy Opiela, a spokesman for the Hays County Sheriff’s Department, says that people trying to call 911 in Hays or Caldwell counties will likely be patched through to a 911 center in Travis County, which will then relay information on to Hays or Caldwell authorities via email or other means.

“There’s either a 911 line that’s been severed or a problem with another piece of fiber-optic equipment,” he said. There is no estimate whenservice may be restored.

Some administrative lines, including ones to San Marcos Police Department and Hays County Sheriff Department, are unable to receive calls. A reporter trying those numbers was greeted with a recorded message that said “Due to local telephone company trouble in the area you are calling, your call cannot be completed at this time. Please try later.”

Opiela said that if callers dial 911 and get a busy signal or no answer, “go to the nearest fire station or flag down a police officer to get help.
