Lately when I pull up the Joint CAD tracking system, there seems to be a lot of calls with the title Hazardous Mat. I'm never really monitoring Washington County so what are those calls about? There's never anything on the news... When I think of hazardous materials I think of chemicals and bombs so..

Gasoline is a hazardous material. An automobile accident with leaking fluids is a hazardous materials incident. And a vehicle carrying hazardous materials is probably being tagged as a hazmat incident, even if there is no leak.
Also, bombs are handled by special teams, not your typical hazmat team.
DOT Definition of Hazardous Material:
A hazardous material is defined as any substance or material that could adversely affect the safety of the public, handlers or carriers during transportation.

Today's hazmat was a natural gas line cut in Forest Grove. That one's not in the news as of yet.
The last hazmat call that made the news was a leak at the OHSU primate center:

Most of the time, if it's a natural gas line cut (a mainline, not just a small leak) they will call a Hazmat Box.

Some info about incidents. I dont work directly with run cards and how they are picked, but since today's natural gas leak was upgraded to a task force or box, they cant upgrade natural gas leak call types. In the past they have changed the call type to residential fire and then upgraded. I think they now change them to a HAZMAT Incident so they can get the upgraded assignment.
(Note, only a few call types have box or task force assignments. Example, Residential/Commercial Fires, Brush/Grass Fires, Aircraft incidents, Train Accidents, HAZMAT incidents and MVA's have medical alarms. I believe there is a multiple patient or something call type also.)

LOL That's funny. I love the dispatcher edited call types. CCOM seems to use them more.
