I've had to use one of those before but, don't ask me what it was for LOL!Same thing was happening with my WS1098. I bought a mono/stereo adapter. That solved my problem.
This is the webpage.
Need an Audio Adapter for Stereo and Mono Products?
Stereo Mono Audio Adapters for Headphones, Earphones etc. Many audio plug and jack sizes in stock for fast shipmentscansound.com
Two stereo headphones, one has 3 rings on the plug, the other has 4
I thought a stereo jack had 2 rings/3 sections and mono had 1 ring/2 sections?
Yep, that wouldn't be a good thing to do.A mono adapter shorts out half of the audio. Don't ever use one in a stereo jack.
All Uniden scanners have a stereo headphone jack.If you had a stereo jack you wouldn't need the adapter because both speakers would already play, Wouldn't they? If you only had a mono jack wouldn't you use a mono to stereo adapter to get both speakers to play. Or not? When I hooked my computer speakers to my WS1098 only one speaker would play until I used the adapter and now both speakers play.

Neither. If you're not getting stereo from the jack, either the jack is bad, or the cable/plug.OK. So I have to get a [mono to stereo] adapter or [stereo to mono] ?
All Uniden scanners have a stereo headphone jack.
How old (what model) is your Uniden scanner that has a mono headphone jack?depends on the age of the scanner. Mine's an older one with a mono jack.
That is correct. The scanner uses a stereo jack, but feeds the same audio signal to L and R. That lets you use the most common type of headphones and earbuds without an adapter, even though the scanner isn't stereo.Let me see if I've got this right, the scanner puts out a mono signal but, the jack is setup to feed both channels of a stereo plug for sound in both ears?
