I heard what sounded like a cell phone ringing over the scanner. Turns out it was a VABCH LEO talking on his police radio to a person about a court date. Is this a usually thing???

Phone patch

Virginia Beach's trunked system does have a phone patch capability. It's been included in the system ever since its initial roll out.

You can hear two things you know you're hearing a phone patch:
1- ringing line (or busy signal).
2- when the officer unkeys his mic you'll hear a beep (courtesy tone).

Like a phone patch on a ham repeater, it is semi-duplex; when the radio is keyed the operator cannot hear anything on the patch side. One difference is that on this system the system continues to transmit the patch side while the officer is talking. It can be funny when an officer calls a landline or cell and the other party isn't familiar with how this works, that person is talking at the same time and suddenly says "HELLO CAN YOU HEAR ME?" or words to that effect. I've heard officers call home (questionable usage?).

I believe (I could be wrong here) that only PD and FD supervisors have radios with patch capability.

Steve is CORRECT! In the mid 80's when Va Beach went 800 I only had a 200XLT and had to put in all 20 freq's into the radio and lock out the CC everynight at midnight.I think the phone patch were all on the same freq. I only heard Fire & Police use this. You can not hear it in the trunk mode just if your scanning the 20 freq. Remember Fire use to be 600-1 and Police were 000-1 series

Greetings, all! Yet another newbie here. Bought a Pro-97 that was a demo or something so I got double the warranty. Then it went on sale 3 weeks later and I got $50 back. It already had a ton of frequencies programmed, and I added a few per Wiki that are apparently new.

I run w/Courthouse Rescue so that's my primary interest, followed by fire and police. I've been reading and reading some more, but I'm sure I'm not getting this done the way it should be. Would anyone be willing to meet after work at Happy Hour somewhere so I can get a tutorial? I'm buyin'!

P.S. I pick up a TON of Public Works and school bus garbage that I don't care about, among other garbage. Need to clean house. :)

What you need to do is enter talk groups you're interested in, then close the bank.
That way the TG's you'll recieve is what you've entered. I'm sure it's in your manual somewhere.

Look up tg's either here or the HRSP. The link for the latter is in my signature.

Thanks, Steve. I'll work on that tomorrow and either admit failure or come back educated. :)

Have a great night.

I've purchased Win97 and am trying to put in the info from http://www.radioreference.com/modules.php?name=RR&sid=507 but I may have the wrong fleet map. I can't put in the police talkgroups after the 2nd entry. It keeps kicking the ID to 000-00. I'm using E1P16 and switching to any other option doesn't seem to work. Where am I going wrong?

Now it's working and I don't know why. LOL

All the VB 800 stuff is type II should not need a fleet map

Mike

Oops.

I just found this in Win97 Help:

"Note: When programming a Motorola Type-II system, make sure all blocks are set to size code S00.
IMPORTANT: When programming a trunked system (especially a Motorola system), program the fleet map before entering talk group IDs."

So do I have to do it all again?
:(
