Hello the_g_man,

Welcome to the wide world of scanning (should be a show,lol). It can be an intoxicating hobby. I have been doing it since early 90's. My first scanner I believe was the Bearcat BC-140 (I think it was called) base station. It had 16 channels and at the time it was enough for me. Now I have 2 handhelds and a mobile in the car each with 1,000 channels & I'm running out of channels (lol).
