Hi all,
I've been trying to pgm my newly purchased (oct '10) bc396xt. I tried looking at Freescan, but can't grasp it. What program is that I can use that's easy to use....

Could somebody help you with Freescan? I think it's one of the best, free programs out there.

Look at BCTool. It's shareware with a free and a paid version. Try the free version first and see if it's easier to understand. I like ARCXT by Butel, but it's not free. You can download it and try it in demo mode for a period of time, Software is really subjective, some people swear by a particular program some swear AT that same program. A lot of people like Freescan, but I think it's just OK.

Try this: FreeScan User Guide - The RadioReference Wiki FYI, am am also very partial to ARC-XT, but I don't think it is significantly easier than FreeScan. The key you may be missing is the access to RR database. Just go to File, Import, and select Radio Reference conventional and supply your RR user name and password, connect. This will bring you to menus for State, and then county. A list of systems will appear for that county, and then you hit import at the bottom right. Close that window and you should see the same systems in the left panel. You now need to set up the communication with your scanner on the Scanner menu. Select control scanner, Com port setup, auto. If all goes well, close that window and then chose Scanner, download. and your scanner should be ready to scan all the things you downloaded.

grimace, be much more specific about what you are trying to program. Go up to our database (the link is in the blue toolbar under the site title on the left) and supply some URLs.

I would also read up on what DMA does and how it works. The key, really, is to understand systems, sites and groups. Our DMA FAQ has a few brief articles on the subject...read the first 3 topics (which includes trunking...) from here...

Uniden DMA FAQ- the RR Wiki

At the bottom of the FAQ are the links to the Easier to Read manuals. Download and read the one for the 396XT.

I firmly believe that no program, no matter how easy it might be, can help unless you understand the concepts behind them. Hopefully those links will get you started in the right direction

Best Regards..Mike
