If you are trying to program it I would recommend paying for the premium subscription to this site then downloading a programming software like Win500 or PSRedit(both have free trial periods), buy the interface cable, then program the scanner using the radioreference database downloads. For stuff other then programming read the manual and then if you have specific questions ask on here. I was also new to the digital trunkers and with PSRedit and the downloads along with a few forum questions programming my Pro 106 was a snap.

I see you mentioned the NJSP. According to the database, it appears that the PSR-300 will be partially successful in monitoring them, as they are a mixture of analog and digital (which the PSR-300 will not receive). However, there are many other services that may be of interest to you. Here is a link to the New Jersey page in the database:

New Jersey Scanner Frequencies and Radio Frequency Reference

For software, you would need WIN97, not WIN500 (that is for a different set of scanners) or PSRedit300. They can be found here:

Win97 - Data Management Software for the PRO-97, PRO-2055, PSR-300, PSR-400, PRO-164, and PRO-163 Scanners

PSREdit - Configuration Editors for the new GRE line of scanners

You would also need the USB programming cable from GRE or Radio Shack. But more importantly, since you are looking for stuff in New Jersey, I highly recommend going to the New Jersey forum on Radio Reference and seeking some assistance with the systems you are more interested in there. You might even find someone who is close to you who can give you some hands on assistance. Here is the link:

New Jersey Radio Discussion Forum - The RadioReference.com Forums

One final thing, here is a link to the Wiki page about trunking. It would be beneficial to you to gain at least a basic understanding of trunking since you are new to that specific dynamics of the hobby:

Trunked Radio Systems - The RadioReference Wiki

I know that is quite a bit of info, but hopefully will be helpful and point you in the right direction. Happy scanning.
