Hey guys, today I purchased a BCD996P2 and while im waiting for delivery I am researching FreeScan. This is my first PC programmable scanner. I decided to use FreeScan because, well, free is in the name. I have a couple questions I dont quite understand and would love if someone could clear things up for me.

1. When setting up a new system can I put all my channels under one system even if they are mixed types or do I need a system for each type of frequency? I thought I could make a single system with digital, conventional etc but now im unsure.

2. If I set a quickkey is that just for use on the physical scanner or does it server any purpose inside of freescan itself?

3. Any recommendations on a good and easy recording program thats not Freescan itself or is the Freescan recording good?

4. (unrelated to freescan) My plan is to use the record out AUX to the Line input on my PC soundcard with a stereo 3.5mm cable. Is this the best connection to make?

Thanks for anyone who takes the time to help a noob out. Only ever had the Radioshack Pro106 about 8 years ago and after regrettable selling it. im back on the scene!

Agreed 100%. Freescan hasn't been updated in well over 5 years & they state on their page that support for the 996P2 is "experimental". Proscan on the other hand is updated frequently & its developer Bob is always willing to lend a helping hand right here on these forums for folks in need. I've been a Proscan user for well over a decade and it never ceases to amaze me. Most stable, feature-packed radio app I've ever used. Before I start to sound like a radio commercial I'll just end it by saying "you won't be disappointed"

The first thing you want to do is set the scanner type.
Next is get the scanner to communicate with ProScan.

Thanks, I got that much figured out LOL. Im very computer savvy so I was hoping for more technical tips that are easy to overlook. Thanks for the reply!

Read the "Easier to Read Manual" link above to understand how the scanner operates. Then, when you get it, read the scanner first before starting any programming.

Also, take your time going through ALL the tabs and options to make sure you get everything set.

Any idea where to find the easier to read manual? A quick search revealed no results. Thanks for the info!

Which "Easier to Read Manual" are you looking for?
The one for the scanner itself is accessible via the link that Budd posted above (post #2).

Doc noted the link for the FreeSCAN user guide.

There is no "Easier to Read" manual for ProScan, but it's manual can be found under the drop-down Support menu.
