Help w/trunking

I have a Pro-97 and have just purchased the 'Yellow Book' for upstate sc freq. The suggestion is to program the control channels and leave in open mode. While doing this I have not had a hit from 1 Sptbg. Co. ID. Or any other active ID's for that matter....
Can anyone provide some feedback?

What control channel frequency did you program? Do you hear the sound of an indling diesel engine on the frequency when sitting on the channel in manual mode?

Did you set the mode of the control channel to MOT?

Did you set the mode of the bank to MOT?
