I just ordered my BCD-996 and I'm going to use it for starcom21. I live in Dist 20 area so do I need to only program the control frequencies for my area or do I have to program all of them and should they be in seperate banks? Is the frequencies all I need to program?

Is there a file somewhere for starcom21 in my area that I can import?

Steve,
Go to the CARMA group site; join if you're not a member (it's free and the information exchange is excellent!). Then go to the CARMACHICAGO.COM site and D/L Rich Carlson's StarCom-21 system file; it contains both USD and 996 files for use with either UASD or ARC996 software. BTW, USD files also work with FeeeScan. The file is divided into thirds, so you can choose to load just the Zone you need. Don't even think about trying to program by hand! You have time to D/L UASD from the Uniden site and/or D/L FreeScan, join CARMA, and D/L the StarCom-21 system file before your scanner arrives.
Good luck and enjoy!

I downloaded Freescan and the Starcom 21 files and no good could not get them to load.
I also tried BCtool and imported the files from R&R well they uploaded into the scanner but still don't hear nothing for Starcom21 all I hear is something that was already in the scanner says nation wide and picking blue star gold star and green star. how do I shut that nation wide off?

I have 4 other scanners and I just can't figure out how to program this thing is there a easy way? I need all the help I can get before I take a ball bat to this over priced peice of junk!

The CARMA Files are made in the Uniden UASD format and the Butel ARC996 format. If you have either of these applications you can load these in your radio.

The 996 and other recent scanners use a totally different method of programming and operations. It appears that you probably have the "Nationwide" System turned on, lock out that system and turn on the local systems.

When you get the CARMA files loaded into the radio you will have to turn off the Systems and Towers not in your area. Since you are in Quincy you can turn off the North and South Systems all together and just enable the Towers in your area (212, 213, 218 etc.)

Check the CARMA StarCom21 Profile, all the tower sites and freqs are listed, so if you want you can manually enter each of your local sites if you want.

Well I tried the carma files had no luck the uniden software would not load them it said error.

If I load these manually can I just put in the control channels only? and is this all i need?
I see all these files that you can upload to the scanner has TGID. I tell you this thing sure is a pain and I understand none of it. Nothing like the good old scanners!

Yes you can load the control channels only if you cannot get the software to load.

I just tried loading the files from the website to my 996 and they worked just fine. Make sure you open the system first (after unzipping them of course) and that you attempt to open the .usd files and not the .m96 ones. (The .m96 are for ARC996, the .usd are for UASD)

If you wish to enter the systems manually then set it to "MOT TYPE2/P25" for the System type, then add Sites, making them "P25". You can enter in just the control channels, but be advised that not all the control channels have been identified so to be safe you can enter in all the known channels for the site, chances are that if we missed a control channel it is already being used as a voice channel.

As for TGID's, you don't need to enter all of them, just assign names to the ones from your area, and you can start locking out the ones from areas you are not interested in.
