i live in maspeth queens and there are several freight line around lirr etc what would you guys recommend me listening too? beside nyc transit stuff

You should be able to get New York & Atlantic Railway. I don't know the freqs though. There's probably tons of stuff around there if you search the 160 MHz RR band. Cross Harbor, CSX...
