11175 is actually part of a large radio network run by the military called the HF-GCS system. In addition to the MWARA frequencies (where New York, Gander and a great many others can be heard when propagation is good) linked above, there is a digital mode called HFDL (some call it HF ACARS) where planes check in and pass short messages. This software can be easily copied by PC-HFDL, which is available both in a free and commercial form. The software link is on the article above. The freqs listed there are a bit dated, and I haven't seen a good text-based listing of them since they changed slightly, but should still be mostly OK.

ZZ0468 your short cut "http://www.arcticpeak.com/radiopages...l_hf_radio.htm" Does not work

It's not a shortcut - just click on it and away you should go. Right now I just tried it, and arcticpeak is refusing connections for some reason.

We have exactly the same information on our Wiki that my friend Risto has - use the 'frequencies' section of...

http://wiki.radioreference.com/index.php/ICAO_HF_Aeronautical_Stations

Again, just click on it - you'll be taken to our Wiki with that article title. 73s Mike

I'm in CA and can normally hear that "New York Radio" on I believe 10051... Seems to cover aviation conditions for most of the upper east coast. Are there others like that for other regions, or is that one unique? Because I've never found any others.

You're right... it's not working right now. It WAS ok at the time I posted. Try again later. If all else fails, I have the map that the link leads to, and I could temporarily post it on the web somewhere, but lets give this a chance to come back online before I do that.

edit: I found the same item I was trying to link to on another website. Try this one...

Dave what you are no doubt hearing is a VOLMET station - there are several of these worldwide. Not a bad catch from California given the crummy propagation of late.

VOLMET is a contraction of 2 French words, that loosely translated mean 'flying weather' - and that's exactly what it's giving out. They tend to be on at specific times after the hour, and are silent at other times. I don't have a good handle on the entire list of stations, but you should have a shot at some of the Asian VOLMETs (maybe from Tokyo or Russia?) given your location. A quick question on the UDXF might bring some results.

A side note - Shannon Aeradio used to verify reception reports with a very unique QSL card - it had an authentic recipe for Irish Coffee (I understand it's been discontinued, darn it). Just think - a QSL that can make you drunk! 'Tuning Oil' for sure, hihi

Thanks... I should have thought of that. Interesting that I haven't heard any others... Especially the HI one.

Hi TexMale:

You should be able to hear the Carribean very easily from TX, and probably S America too. I have heard traffic from Africa sometimes at night. I once heard AirForce2 checking in on the way to Europe. The references sited above should have all you need.

And I'll second 11175 also, never know what you might hear there.
