Thought I'd finally say hello. Got my tech license in Feb (2 months ago) and joined the local ARC. Actually going on a Fox Hunt this weekend so I'm looking forward to that.

Simple rig: Anytone AT-5888UV using a 13.8V power supply feeding an Ed Fond dual band j-pole outside about twenty feet in the air with about 75' of LMR400. AT-778UV in the truck with a Nagoya UT-72. A whole bunch of Baofeng UV-82HPs and miscellaneous FRS radios for emergency use. Really, as a prepper for the last several decades, that was most of my motivation for getting my license; having some sort of comms in emergencies and filling that little neglected gap in my preps.

Not exactly new to the field as I've been a television broadcast engineer for over 20 years. After getting out of the navy. 8 years as a corpsman, and working in healthcare for another 8 years, I kind of changed horses in the middle of the stream you might say and went back to school getting an EE degree starting at a local TV station as a master control op while in school. Fun job, WAY better than healthcare, and barring any disasters, I may actually get to retire before this decade is up...

Anyway, happy to be here. Honestly, I probably use the website mostly for looking up call signs but I do peruse the forums.

Congrats on the new HRL, looks like most of your interest is SHTF backup comms. Provided that is the case you might want to look into HF NVIS Near Vertical Incidence Skywave propagation. Can be a solid 50 to 200 mile SSB link on the lower HF bands during the day. Does not take too much as far as equipment - a good 100 watt HF rig and a low dipole. Would require an upgrade to General. Could be very useful in hilly areas. Enjoy your new ticket, Dale

Welcome to RR. There's a lot of great help and even better people that want to help. I'm in the same boat as you.
