I am a Wal-Mart associate as a part time job in the summer we get a discount for merchandise bought from Walmart through the store or site to store...

I don't want to put hundreds of dollars into a scanner. I wish I had the $$$ to do so but I don't at this time. Walmart.com has a Uniden 800mhz model BC355C. I guess it is a Bearcat. Does anyone know how good this scanner is and how easy it is to program/operate?

Thanks here is a link: I would basically pay around $75 for it after tax.

I see you are in West Virginia.According to the database Morgantown PD/FD are digital now and the sheriff in your county is also. It looks like the sheriff analog is deprecated and is on the WVIRP along with state police and county ems but they are patched.
Eventually you are going to need a digital scanner.

Hey Wvu

Let me start by saying that most (if not all) the public safety agencies in Monongalia Co. are now on the WVIRP digital trunk system which the 355 cannot monitor however there may be a few agencies that are still using backup analog patches from the system that you may be able to hear. Due to this you will be limited to what you can hear in your county.

I have had several BC350A models which is comparable to the 355 only with less features and I really liked them. I see that they have added more memory channels and a few more features into 355 when compared to a 350A so it is more "up to date."

I can say that the 355 is tricky to program when starting out since there is no keypad. You will have to search either by using the preset search ranges or by using the service search buttons and find the freq(s) you wish to program into the private bank and do it that way. Once you get used to it though it will go faster. And once you get it programmed it should work good for you. Also for $75 that sounds like a pretty good deal.

Digital Scanner

Are you saying I need something different to pick up the digital? Or how do I get that? I try listening on here to some of our signals for the county but the stream is unreliable and i want something I can depend on and listen on my own...an external source non-internet based...

SO are you saying to listen to the digital bands I would have to purchase something like this?

Walmart.com: Uniden Digital Mobile Scanner with 25,000 Channels and GPS Support: Auto Electronics.

Yes in order to hear all of the agencies in Monongalia, Marion, and Harrison counties you will need a digital scanner. The Uniden models tend to run higher in price compared to the Radio Shack and GRE models but the one on the link provided will work great. I believe right now you can pick up the RS PRO 106 model for $399 and the PRO 197 mobile/base model for just a little bit more. I do recommend getting a programming cable and dowloading programming software to make your life a lot easier though lol.

Wow -- time for a price rollback!

I noticed in the link you provided that Walmart is selling the Uniden BC996XT for $644.88. In case you didn't realize, that is WAY over the usual price for it, and the other prices in that same link are well above average too. For example, Scanner Master (a reputable scanner dealer, as well as a sponsor of this website) sells the same radio for $469.95. I've bought from them several times and they provide excellent customer service. Unless you're getting a huge employee discount, I would encourage you to shop around before buying, regardless of which model you decide would be best for your area. Hope this helps, and good luck with your shopping! :)

Walmart isn't known for selling scanners-----------------------they are usually overpriced even with the 10% discount employees get. (Wife works in the local store---in the electronics area)

Look on ebay......................but it sounds like you will need a digital scanner.............plan on spending 4-500 bucks to be able to listen to your area.

If you are a novice to scanning consider the GRE PSR-800. or the Uniden HomePatrol . "They are almost idiot proof.
