CSP Press Release
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Date: March 6, 2011 Time: 8:45 p.m.
This afternoon at about 3:30 p.m., Colorado State Troopers were dispatched to an injury crash involving a tractor-trailer on I-70 near milepost 207. Troopers have determined that the truck was traveling down the tunnel grade on westbound I-70 when its brakes failed. The truck sideswiped a Chevrolet Trailblazer causing both vehicles to rollover.
At least one person from the Trailblazer had to be extricated and sustained serious injuries that are not life-threatening. Two other occupants also sustained minor to moderate injuries. The driver of the truck, Mona Hauan, age 59 from Texas, was taken to an area hospital with minor injuries. Hauan has been cited for careless driving causing injuries. Excessive speed for the steep grade is believed to be the leading contributing factor in the crash.
The truck was carrying a viscous material used in drilling operations called sulfatrol. An unknown quantity of the material was spilled onto the roadway during the crash causing the interstate to be closed for several hours as Colorado State Patrol Hazmat crews worked with local authorities to clean up the material. The material is not believed to be a hazard.
Eastbound lanes of I-70 reopened for good at 5:25 p.m. As of 8:30 p.m., it is believed that the interstate will completely reopen within the hour.
