I have the HomePatrol and BCD396XT. Both are great scanners!

The HP has a very sensitive receiver, but the 396XT isn't bad either.

If you travel a lot the HP requires little to no programming with a GPS unit (VERY COOL if you dislike plotting and programming an entire trip.)

If you are staying local I would go with the 396XT because is has more features! I like the close call feature, temp lock out and being able to enter your our frequencies. (The HP will not allow you to enter your own info without third party software which I haven't tried yet.)

The 396XT is small and very portable. The HP would be kind of an odd walking around with scanner.

I don't know if I'd be able to choose! I had the 396XT first then got the HP, now considering the 966XT for my office :)

Thats my two scents.

Quick question ref the HP ...
Do you need to use a GPS with the machine or does it work without one???

I have 3 different Garmin GPSs ... but none have the 9 pin port ... just the round 4 pin.

The HP1 works fine w/o a GPS. It is just a lot nicer when traveling say in a car to use a GPS with it. Stationary you can just punch in a ZIP Code.

If you are talking about the older Garmin GPS, like the "12" and the "GPS V", those ports are just the Garmin side plug-ins. The cable that goes there actually has a 9-pin serial port on the other end. You can see one at https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=574&ra=true, and of course there are probably a lot of other places outside of Garmin where you can get them for le$$. Even the newer Garmins like the eTrex family still use 4-pin plug-in, they are just inline now instead of round, but that's all that's needed for the GPS. The cables still terminate on the other end with 9-pin serial plugs.
