Homemade Antenna Help

Ok i just went out and bought a brand new antenna, from RadioShack it was a huge antenna, for my scanner well It sucked, my homemade antenna is just some speaker wire strung along side of my house like older am/fm radios, i mean my thrown together one out preforms the new hottness one, someone please tell me why this is, is there one out there thats better than mine, thats sold somewhere else besides radioshack or online.!!

If it works, it's good. Have run home-built for all bands for the last 40 years or more.

What antennae did you buy from RS and is it set up properly. Sounds like you bought the huge discone that I have not tried. I find the best antenna it the tiny 800 mhz antennae and I use about 10ft of quality coax to enable me to clip mount it outside against the siding for home scanning. It outperforms the sputnik antennae even.
