BOULDER, Colo. -- An explosion and fire forced a Boulder County family into the early-morning cold Tuesday.
The fire was reported in unincorporated Boulder County, at 3826 Fredericks Court, just west of Foothills Parkway, shortly before dawn.
Three residents of the home were able to escape without injury.
When firefighters arrived just before 5 a.m., they found a large hole in the rear of the home and large flames.
"The rear portion of the house was fully engulfed, including the deck area," said Jim Chamberlinn with the Boulder County Sheriff's Office. "Reports from neighbors is it started from a propane tank, but the actual cause is being investigated."
Officials said at least one of two 20-pound propane tanks exploded during the fire. One was attached to a bar-b-que grill and the other was not.
The home suffered a large amount of structure and smoke damage, officials said. A nearby home sustained minor damage from the fire.
The area was cordoned off while emergency crews worked to mop up the blaze.
