I just got my BR330T, and this is my first "modern" scanner (my other is a BC101). I'm just curious how you guys organize and group your systems, groups, and frequencies on your scanner?

For example, you might have a system named "Public Safety", and then a group "Police"; or in system "Public Safety" maybe a group "NJ State Police", and "MyTown PD Disp.", etc.

I'm trying to think out how I want to organize my scanner. :)

Everyone has their own logical (or illogical) way of personalizing their scanning banks. I have them set based on location. All of my really local stuff is listed by town and service (PD,FD, FG, EMS, PW, OEM) with only one type (MOT or EDACS) per bank. Bank two are other area towns of interest. Three is State Police Trunked. Four, Five and Six are for where the relatives live and along the road to them. Seven and eight are places like NYC or Philly. Nine is my emcomm list for amateur radio) and ten is for family vacation in Sarasota. In this way, I can turn on/off the banks I choose to listen to. Others may like all their PD in one, FD in another, etc. It all depends on how your feverious brow like to organize things. Besides, if you try a layout and don't like it, you can easily move things around via software without a whole re-programming job.

Hi file clerks,

My KISS filing system is typical, each trunked system in a separate bank with conventional systems categorized, local towns, railroad, federal, military, etc. Within those banks each is subcategorized with locations and agencies grouped together.

Not true at all; I always feel it's a good idea to listen to other people's ideas to help you make a decision.

Anyway thanks for all the input... :)

Most activities in my area are on conventional frequencies.

I have my .usd files set up this way:

Separate System files for each:
Agency
Town
County
Air
MilAir
Satcom
etc.

Within each file for a locality, I use the following convention:
Group 1 = Police & TAC
Group 2 = Fire
Group 3 = EMS
Group 4 = Business
Group 8 = Highway Dept. & Municipal

On many systems, I disable all EXCEPT the GQK for Group 1 (Police).

I have one system that has the primary fire/ems dispatch frequencies.

In the software, I disable all systems except those that I always want to listen to.

NOTE: None of the Systems or Groups are 'LOCKED OUT', just disabled.

With the scanner programmed like that, it's a simple matter to enable/disable any systems and groups with just a few key strokes.

I include the system quick key # in the file name. I try to use something related to the agency as the quick key. On conventional systems I can often use the two digits after the decimal in the primary frequency as the quick key #. For others, something that I can relate to the area. That makes it a lot easier to remember what's what.

You should be able to come up with a similar scheme that works well for you in such a way that you don't need a cheat-sheet.

My programmables are all programmed in a similar manner. I am typically listening to multiple scanners at the same time, and will have opposing banks enabled on each. However, when I am on the road, I try to keep just the "local" stuff for where I am at or where I am headed enabled. Because of frequent trips to the same areas; that caused me to arrange things as follows:

bank 0 - FIRE - all conventional channels (within about 80 miles)
bank 1 - CAL FIRE - statewide freqs, includes NIFC channels
bank 2 - USFS, BLM & PARKS - Statewide, state & national parks, forests
bank 3 - CHP - statewide freqs (includes former state police freqs)
bank 4 - SACRAMENTO TRS (includes car to car & media freqs)
bank 5 - ROSEVILLE TRS
bank 6 - LAW ENFORCEMENT - Yolo, Yuba, Sutter, Placer, El Dorado, Butte, Solano
bank 7 - LAW ENFORCEMENT - San Joaquin, Stanislaus, Amador, Calaveras, Tuolumne
bank 8 - MARINE & AMATEUR - includes some USCG, FRS, GMRS
bank 9 - AVIATION - includes most Calif airports

ideas on programming the 330t

Patrick, there is no WRONG way to program it as its up to YOU!! Just be sure to leave some channels open for programming new or changed frequencies you find during searches. Have fun and monitor responsibly. The only tip I would share with you is to try and be SURE the frequency is ACTIVE before you enter it. I recently bought the 330 and love it!! It seems to have a stable audio, even better than the 396!!! only drawback is the lack of digital capability.

I have two scanners that I use on a regular basis.

BC796D - Public Safety/General Monitoring

Bank 1) Labette & Neosho counties (i'm located about a mile south of Neosho county border, in Labette)
Bank 2) Miscellaneous & Semi-dead Frequencies
Bank 3) Local Business Freqs
Bank 4) Joplin, MO area (way east of me)
Bank 6) Crawford & Cherokee counties (east of me)
Bank 7) Montgomery & Wilson counties (west of me)
Bank 8) Oklahoma freqs (way south of me)

BC780XLT - MilAir/Railroads

Bank 1) FSS/Unicom/Multicom
Bank 2) Kansas City ARTCC freqs
Bank 3) Memphis ARTCC freqs
Bank 4) Military
Bank 5) Railroad

so there you have it. i separated out the frequencies to areas so i can turn them off and on depending on what's going on. pretty easy.

Although people with banks & lists scanners (not a dynamic memory radio) can provide some ideas as to arrangements, it really doesn't apply to a BR330T. And since all the dynamic memory radios are Uniden, I am moving this entire thread to the Uniden forum.

Those of you with the older banks & lists scanners (like the BC796D, Pro-97, etc.) can continue to provide arrangement ideas, as the dynamic memory allows for changing the order of things very rapidly from the keyboard and a little slower with software.

Since you have one, don't you think 6000 channels is enough?

I think you can wind it down too a couple of basic ways to organise your scanner.

One seems to be to organise it into areas. States, county's o what ever. Divide your system files into areas and the groups into the services.

The other is to organise it the other way around, services then divide into areas.
While there can be all sorts of variations on this these seem to be the most popular ways. No way is right or wrong. Me personally I go the second way, as I like to lock out some services sometimes and concentrate on others. So if you set a system up for the police and another for fire or what ever, you can lock them out at will.
For traveling I go the first way, as its easier to lock areas out as yu travel through them.

I used to think that was far more than enough. I have several BCD396T, BCD996T, and BCT15 scanners.

Now I have over 200 usd files. I find that I constantly have to add/remove various systems depending on my travel plans to make it all fit. It seems that every time I remove a system, I find a need to enable it.

Then I got a BCT15 to use full time with my online feed. I had a heck of a time reducing the programming to get under the 2500 limitation. While my online feed normally scans only 57 conventional frequencies, I want to have all of the others available for activation during major events.

I find that everyone arranges them in a way that makes sense for them. Mine are as follows (and they make sense to me).

00 - Conventional Government
01 - P25 Digital Agencies (Fire-Ambulance-Police)
02 - Large LTR System
03 - Small LTR System
04 - Private LTR System
05 - Health Authority LTR System
06 - Conventional Emergency Channels
07 - Conventional Fire Channels
08 - Conventional Ambulance Channels
09 - Royal Canadian Mounted Police
10 - Military Operations
11 - Air
12 - Amateur
13 - Coast Guard
14 - Utilities
15 - Trains
16 - Business 1
17 - Business 2
18 - Business 3

Seems like I mostly listen to 1 and 7

Good luck and have fun!

Ears are bursting....

For my BR330T...

Systems 1-19: Local Trunked Public Safety and Commercial
Systems 20-40: Local Conventional Public Safety and Commercial
Systems 50-70: Out of town Trunk and Conventional Systems (these get changed almost on a weekly basis depending on where my business trips take me)
Systems 80-99: Entertainment & Misc
.....System 92: Shortwave I
.....System 93: Shortwave II
.....System 94: Local News Heli-Aircraft
.
.
.
.....System 96: Local AM/FM/TV
..........Group 1: Local AM
..........Group 2: Local FM
..........Group 3: Local TV
I had these all in one group in the beginning, but I became self-concious of the amount of clicking the knob made from having to scroll thru dozens of channels to get from one station to another (sorry for the run-on...lol) at work. That's why I decided to break them down into seperate Groups.
.
.
.

I left a few system #'s out because I treat them as overflows.

I give each system a quick key (yes it gets tiring to turn them all on or off). Need a fix for that in the next version.

System Quick Keys
0-9 are all ones i listen to daily (so i can easily turn them on off by hitting the number)...

1/2/3 - conventional
4/5/6 - police west/central/east/
...8 = police south district

10-19 are systems i might listen to every other day
20-99 - specific area SQK (i.e. 20-29 cottage, 30-39 next city over etc etc)
