• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

How does an EDACS system affiliate?

All:

I'm using the log from Unitrunker to determine if little used talkgroups are analog or digital on the local analog and Provoice digital system. While scanning the log for talkgroups, I see quite often the radios affiliating with the system.

My question is how do the radios do that? Do they affiliate with every talkgroup that is programmed in the radio, or just the one that the radio happens to be tuned to when it powers up? Does a radio affiliate with a talkgroup when the user changes talkgroups? If I can figure that out, it might help me map out what is programmed in radios used by the various agencies.

Thanks,

Warren

If the radios are configured to affiliate, they will do so when turned on and every time they change talk groups and or systems, on a multi-site system.

Hi Warren;

The radio affiliates to the one talkgroup that is currently selected. When the user turns the channel selector knob - the radio affiliates to the new selection.

SO if an agency burns thru every talk group on their system they will all show up?
Say...
radio: Lable: Group: Lable:
567 Jail Com 48 Operations
567 Jail Com 50 Transport
567 Jail Com 47 Incomming

Say that 48 is comon. And 50 and 47 have never came up and they went and tuned their radio to them 2 talk groups they would show up? Even if they didnt transmitt on them?

The radio can only affiliate on one TG; the TG that the radio will transmit on if the PTT button is pressed, not any TGs that are in it's scan list.

Yes, once a radio is affiliated with a TG then that site is supposed to transmit that TG so the new radio can hear it. It doesn't matter if the radio ever transmits on it or not as long as it's affiliated.

I've seen this happen on Motorola systems. Someone will turn on their portable, then spin the dial. The radio will affiliate with each talkgroup in turn.

The local EDACS systems in my area don't display affiliations, but I imagine the same thing would happen if they did.

Here in Chatham Kent they do. Not sure how it works thou..
Police dispatcher will say 10-39 (witch is switch channs) and they go to querry and nothign happens in the aff area. Same with fire diept. When they switch channs and talk on them nothign happens.
But i have maybe 19 or so in a 12 hour shift of affiliations.

If a single unit goes to a talkgroup that no one else has registered in (other units, console, etc) the system knows it doesn't need to transmit. In a wide area (multi site) system, it should only bring up sites that have users in that talkgroup registered there. To do so would waste bandwidth on the backbone.

With advanced protocols, the switch knows the location (site) of every registered user.
