• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

You sure you want to flip the bill to add bands on that ol' tank? Depending on what they give you for pricing it gets expensive very fast for such a old radio.
Unless he can find someone who can give him a deal on it. I dont think I would pay 500 or more for a string upgrade

NO! HAMS DESERVE FREE UPGRADES
because we are the chosen people...
Yea they don’t deserve it.

Geez, let's not tar an entire community with the same brush or anything..... I'm a ham and I don't expect anything for free. If it's free, great; if not I'm perfectly willing to pay for it. :cautious:

What radio? If it’s an XL, it has an actual file. If it’s an XG (Unity) or earlier, it just has a string of numbers. You can read an XG or earlier feature string from the front display if the radio is properly configured. You can also read it from radio maintenance, which is usually installed alongside RPM.

Honestly, I’m not sure you can easily get the feature file out of an XL… I’ve never needed the old one in order to get a new one.

It's easy, but I'm don't have that laptop with me. There's a menu item at the top of the screen. It downloads the .fss file to your computer and you e-mail that to the dealer. They send you a new .fss file back and you load that into the radio.
I'm totally new to Harris gear, and it was easy to figure out.

Just launch RPM2, click on Radio, click on Feature Data. Read it out of the radio, make a note of where the .fss file saves to. That file gets sent out to your dealer or direct to the Harris TAC, along with your feature order. A new version comes back to you that you then load into the radio. Simpler than it was in the legacy radios.

The .fss file is plain text, mostly, showing what option codes are in the radio, but there is a section that consists of encrypted data so you can't just easily add features by adding lines and option codes.

Cool thanks… like I said, I’ve never had a reason to read the file out. Makes sense it would be easy, but whets even easier is not needing it to add features!
