Looks like you have keyboard issues, as your exclamation mark is stuck and I can't understand the end of your post.

In any case, at about 1/3rd volume I hear it fine in the house. 3/4s can be heard 50 feet away. You may have a defective unit.

I was wondering if the speaker/headphone jack auto is reduced on the homepatrol like the 396XT when used with an external speaker or not. Thinking of getting one for the car.

Sorry but I must speak the facts on this one.

Every Uniden scanner made since the BC780XLT has had nothing but JUNK for audio amplifiers and speakers. Take one apart and do some poking around in there, you'll see all the the junk Uniden throws in there. The HP-1 and the X/XT series are no exception. Try putting one of these so called mobile scanners in your car and try to hear a conversation over the air at highway speed. You won't hear much but the distorted low audio as you crank the volume to full blast in vain. Someday Uniden might wake up and put some real audio amplifiers and speakers in the "high end" scanners. Don't hold your breath.......

I missed the facts - I did see some opinions though!

I have no problem hearing this or any other Uniden in the car at highway speeds (and occasionally higher ;) )

You must have an electric car that's barely capable of highway speeds, or a prius perhaps...:)

I've had a lot of cars and even more radios. The uniden scanners have always been hard to hear in the cars. Thats what I base my facts on, real world usage. My kenwood dualbander that costs 2/3's of what 996XT costs has real audio on the external speaker jack. Its not rocket science, perhaps it is for Uniden engineers though.

Well someone better start cranking the audio up as the new VHF 7.5 splits on some FD's here are hardly audable....One good feature on Uniden is the upgradable audio menu, that helps on the H/H XT scanners....

Yup. Audio stinks while mobile. I'm looking at the convoluted set up for an amplified speaker or just keep using an earbud. One option is annoying and the other is.... well also annoying. As someone above pointed out- they market this as a mobile scanner, but it doesn't lend it self to mobile applications very well.

I have a lot of issues and complaints about the HP, but audio was never one of them. Mine is plenty loud enough and clear.

Just another nail in why I am done with the HP1.

You realize of course you are responding to comments posted 2.5 years ago!

In any event I have not had a problem with my own Uniden scanners in an auto. I have a Toyota Avalon which maybe has better sound insulation as I have no problem hearing the scanner. I also have a Kenwood two way radio, with both the scanner and the Kenwood I am using MOT external speakers. All the radios and speakers were installed by my local MOT service shop. All work fine, I have absolutely no connection with Uniden except as a satisfied user.

No. I was responding to someone that posted at 9:40 PM last night. ...But I didn't realize that he was responding to a 2 year old thread.

My post you cite was in answer to #15 which was by Medic115. His post was replying yesterday to one from June 2011, I was NOT responding yours #16

No problem, my HP-1 audio is fine, is loud in my auto but I am admit the Avalon is noted by Consumers Reports for being quiet.
