I'm planning a trip to the St.Pete area in week. Will my HP-1 work good enough to hear PCSO and FD traffic. I really don't to travel by plane with my SDS100. Will be in the ST.Pete Beach/ Treasure Island area for the most part.

Pinellas is simulcast so you will have issues of simulcast distortion if you decide to bring your HP1 along.
Your SDS-100 will perform MUCH better than your HP-1 on the Pinellas Co P25 simulcast system.
FYI, I've carried a bag with multiple scanners and radios on work trips. Not a single issue after dozens of trips.

Depending on your EXACT location, of course, but it's not likely that you will hear anything on the Pinellas P25 system with the HP-1. I had one and... nothing/nada/zip! In my case, I had to switch to the SDS-200 and a paperclip antenna (literally) - but I'm nearly LoS to several tower sites.
