I checked the database, but it wasn't very clear. Does the Highway Patrol use any 800mhz in Wayne county? If so what are they. I am looking to buy a new scanner, but I am not sure if I should buy one with trunking or not. Also, what are alpha tags I hear people mention? Thanks

The statewide VIPER system is pretty built-out in your area. You may find the SHP for your area there. There are VIPER sites in Johnston County (Sites 902 & 903), Lenoir County (Sites 913 & 914) and Duplin County (Sites 910 & 911). So you are pretty well surrounded by VIPER sites.

Go to the VIPER database here and load those sites. As far as alpha tags that is a way of representing talkgroup id's with whatever text you want (i.e. talkgroup id 528 can have an alpha tag assigned to it to say "SHPTRPAMAID" (State Highway Patrol Troop A Mutual Aid), or whatever you want it to say. It's it's a lot easier than trying to remember the numeric id's.

Not all scanners support alpha tags though, it depends on what you are using.

There are plenty of folks on this forum closer to you who will probably have more/better information than this. I'm not sure what troop covers your area.

Sorry, just realized you said you were looking to buy a scanner.

It looks like VIPER is the only trunked system in your area so
you will need a trunktracking scanner to monitor the VIPER system. The local stuff in Wayne county is conventional and doesn't require a trunktracker.

These days there isn't much sense in buying a scanner that doesn't do trunktracking.

As Scott has mentioned it is almost foolish not to buy a scanner that can do trunktracking today...if you are ok with only buying a lowcost radio to use now and maybe upgrade in the future I would recommend the Uniden BC246T or BR330T...both can handle the NCSHP as it stands now as it mostly uses analog talkgroups...BUT if you can afford a Uniden BCD396T or Radio Pro 96 go for either one as NCSHP already has a few digital talkgroups on VIPER and you will see more of the SHP talkgroups switch over to digital in the future....
Let us know if you have further questions and Happy Monitoring!

HP Trunking

They are right. It would be a good idea since you are looking to buy a new scanner invest wisely and get some thing that will work for atleast a few yaers.

The reason I say this is because I read in an article that the Wayne Co Commissioner are looking at approving funds to construct a new countywide Vhf trunking system. I don't know if the current trunk trackers will work or not, I figure they will because Brunswick Co. is starting to work on both Vhf and Uhf trunking.

Just a thought

Thanks for the help guys. I saw a pro-433 on sale for 150 or 160. Is it worth the money or should I go with one of the other ones you suggested?

Sorry I am new to the whole trunking thing. When I looked in the database I saw the sites you were talking about and the primary frequencies. The thing I am unclear about is when I look in the System Talkgroup table and see DEC-2064 HEX-081 A display-SHPTRPCDIST2 Troop C District 2. What would I enter as a frequency to listen to Troop C district 2. I hope this makes sense. Thanks.

For trunktracking you either enter all the frequencies for one particular trunking site, or in the case of scanners that do control-channel trunking, you just enter the control channel frequencies. For Radioshack GRE scanners (i.e. the Pro 433 or Pro 2055) you enter these frequencies into one "bank". For Uniden scanners you create a new "system".

Once you've done that you can scan the trunked system. From here you have to tell the scanner what talkgroups you want to listen to. In a trunked system talkgroups are what individual frequencies or channels used to be. The decimal number is the numeric id of a talkgroup.

So in your case to listen to Troop C district 2 you would enter talkgroup id 2064. Now the scanner can follow that talkgroup and ignore the others.

Spend some time reading through the WIKI section of this site. It's a wealth of information. As far as the Pro433 one issue is it doesn't support text tags. So you'd have to remember that 2064 is Troop C, District 2, rather than seeing it in the display. I have both Radio Shack and Uniden scanners but I'm biased in favor of Uniden. Take a look at the BC15. It's has a lot more features and I think you can get it for $229 from Universal.
