Not sure if this belongs here or in the software forum.

Is there a way to preserve the status of the avoided frequencies in a HPII? As it is, when I update my favorite list, all the avoids are removed, which means I have to sit in front of the scanner and manually set the avoid as the unwanted frequency rolls around.

Probably a dumb question to start with, but why are they even in your favorites list? If the first thing you do is avoid them, remove them instead.

Are you reading the scanner first then applying the updates or just sending the updates to the scanner?

Simple solution if you are using Sentinel. Apply the avoids in the master database. I do this for Schools and Courts that had PDs that have talk groups in one of the 3 "law" Service Types. After that I can send Departments/Sites to a fav list and the avoids remain intact. On top of that I do not get them when using the GPS (using the full database). Normally I run with the full database off and only one local fav list on. The only service types I run are the 3 for law, the 3 for multi and Interop. The Service Types do not change - GPS or local fav list active.

Is it temporary or permanent avoids?

Temporary avoids are kept in a reserved memory area in the scanner and gets cleared when you switch favorite list or after a reload of a list, as they are temporary avoids that are used to solve a temporary problem.

Permanent avoids gets stored to the actual frequency record, but are temporary kept in memory until you power down or switch favorite lists or connect the USB cable in mass storage mode when it says "writing to SD card". But if you write the same favorite list from Sentinel to the scanner the avoid info will be overwritten by the ones you have programmed in Sentinel.

sending the updates to the scanner?

I send it to the scanner after importing the frequencies into my favorites. Going through each entry and removing the avoids would be difficult, even if I had a list to refer to.

is there a better way?

in a perfect world, when the favorite list is updated, any avoids would be left alone.

I will check into Sentinel.

If these channels are in a Favorites list, then editing the lists, adding to them, whatever you need to do, will not change the Avoid status all by itself, unless you reset it yourself when editing. If, when editing, you appended updated systems from the main database, you may have overwritten some of your Avoids without realizing it. When you download your lists from Sentinel to the scanner, you will overwrite the ones in the radio. So if the Avoid was overwritten during the edit or update process, then you'll overwrite the status in the scanner as well.

You need to read your lists from the scanner, to capture the Avoids you set while scanning. That way, your Avoids list would be the same both in the software as well as the HP-II. However, if the Avoids on the scanner were only 'temporary avoids', then they will clear themself. Set them as permanent so that they will retain the desired status.

Try one of these:

1. Set the avoids in the scanner, then READ the scanner into Sentinel.

or

2. Set the avoids in Sentinel then write to the scanner.

Sentinel has no way to know what you have changed in the scanner unless you read the contents.

Thank you all for the replies. I use ARCPatrol because the GUI is familiar from when I used ARC96 for a RS PRO2096.

Time to learn Sentinel.
