HT1000 Problems

I just bought a used Motorola HT1000 handheld. When you key it up it beeps and then beeps continually throughout the transmission about every 10 seconds. I've tried reprogramming and have taken it to a Motorola dealer. They don't have any idea how to stop the beep. They suggested I send it to Motorola, but they want a flat fee of $225.00 to even look at it.

Does anyone have any suggestions on where the problem might be? I talked to the guy I bought it from, and he said it had been doing it since he purchased it about 4 or 5 years ago. It doesn't cause any problems but is annoying as hell.

I think it is probably in the programming somewhere, but I don't know where to start looking.

There is no programming option to make the radio beep. It should not be making ANY noise WHILE you are transmitting if there is nothing wrong with it. Can you descripe the sound, or better yet, make a recording of it.

It could be the VCO unlocking or a power problem. Is it the same as the power-up beep or different?

If you have a another battery, try it on your radio and see if that has any change. Or, place it into the charger and see if the beep goes away. It might just need a new battery. Always better to try the cheap fixes first.

The battery warning does NOT sound while transmitting so the battery probably has little if anything to do with it.

Is there any degradation in your TX signal, or is it ok?

I've tried several different batteries, two of which are brand new. It doesn't matter which battery I use it still continues to beep. The transmit signal is fine. There is no degradation, in fact dispatch says it sounds better than most of the radios we use except for the annoying beep.

I think what is happening is the radio is beeping through the speaker, and the mike is picking up the beep and transmitting it. I'm going to try plugging in an ear bud speaker and see if that solves the problem.

Is it the same as the power-up beep or different?

My radio doesn't beep when you power it up so I'm not sure. It almost sounds like some kind of indicator for a repeater system. The first beep isn't all that bad because it reminds me not to get in a hurry and talk before the repeater starts transmitting, but the beeps during the transmission bug the hell out of me and the dispatcher.

Does the radio transmit a PTT ID when you key up? It would sounds like a digital squawk while the first beep is sounding. That would be normal and the beep would be called a "side-tone". It is to prevent you from speaking while the ID is being transmitted.

However, if you radio is NOT transmitting that digtial ID a the beginning of the transmission, it should not be making any sounds on key-up.

There is also NO normal, proper, programmable operating mode that makes it beep while transmitting. It has nothing to do with repeaters or batteriers. It is not normal or something you should expect. It is a PROBLEM of some kind.

It is transmitting a PTT ID. I had a pretty good idea what the first beep was. It is the repeating beeps every 10 seconds or so that is so iritating. I was hoping to find out what might be causing it so I could relay it to my local shop. Motorola is way to expensive ($225.00 flat fee) to just send it in and hope.

I hope someone else has had a problem similar and might be able to enlighten me.

Ok, good. So we know the first beep is the PTT Sidetone. That is normal.

The rest of them, I wish I could tell you but I'm not service shop.

In my experience, every time we send a radio in for Flat Rate, we basically get a brand new radio back. Regardless of what it was sent in for. (No, it's not really brand new, but it would sure leave you guessing.....)

I have seen it on some of them before, and even had it with my radio. The little metal button on the inside of the case that goes to the PTT contact slides of center and for what ever reason it will do that. I looks like a piece of scotch tape holding it in place. It sounds like you keep keying up the radio every few seconds. You guys know what I am talking about? Ever pull and HT or MTSX series radio apart?

Well, if it is a quick de-key and re-key of the PTT, the radio would transmit the PTT-ID again. Does your radio send the data burst in mid-transmission along with the beep?

I'm not sure if it does or not. That is something worth checking though. I'll check on it when I go back to work on Saturday. I don't know if the dispatcher will be able to tell since it only shows which radio was the last to transmit and not how many times it transmitted. I may have to take it back to the shop, but it would be better than having to send it in to Motorola and not have one for a couple of weeks. I'll let you know as soon as I find something out.

Just listen to your portable transmit frequency on a scanner for data in addition to the beep. What you are describing as a beep, they may be hearing as MDC. (or whatever format your ANI is in)

I tried to pull apart my MTX 8000, but i couldn't figure out how. damn Motorola and those radios that are built to last!

Its sounds like there are to many options enable inthat radio of yours.....
I personally have 4 HT1000 myself and never had a problem.

Dont give up ! You need to find the right programmer who knows all the options of that radio and that should solve your problem.
