Not really scanning, I understand...

Just seeing if anyone has good places to buy Motorola HT1250's?

or eBay.. make sure to look for a unit with recent firmware 05.xx.xx and to a lesser extent one with the blue gasket around the battery contacts.

ATF is right, those are you're best bet.

The recent firmware will allow you to avoid several known issues with earlier models. Also firmware is not easy to obtain and is not free so you are better off getting the most recent version you can.

Make sure you get the full model number and firmware before you buy. Also an HT1250 is not the same as an HT1250LS or LS +. Do a search on batlabs for more specifics. Odds are what you are looking for is a plain HT1250.

Are you looking for VHF or UHF?

Not to burst your bubble but the VHF HT1250's seem to be.. crap. Even with the latest firmware.

I would tend to agree. If you only need a few channels a Vertex VX-180 is a nice little radio for under $200 new. If you want more channels then I would look at an MT2000 or an Astro Saber II or III which are both in the same ball park as a used HT1250 as far as price goes.

Would you care to expound on that?

My VHF unit seems to work just fine. However, I do have one complaint about adjacent channel rejection.

Its not so much that they don't perform, its that relative to other models they do not perform quite as well. Side by side with an MT2000 or Saber (Astro, System, or otherwise) the HT1250's that I have worked with are not as sensitive and certainly not as rugged or well built.

Also, the audio on both my VHF wasn't very good. I have found that the Waris and Expert series radios in VHF flavor just don't hold up as well as the Jedi and Saber Series. The UHF units are a different story and worked just fine for me.

I personally have gone back to all Sabers/Jedis at this point. The only feature the Waris/Expert series has over them is QCII encode.

HT1250 VS Sabers, etc

There is nothing more sobering to find out that you get what you pay for!

There were considerable price differences in the Motorola radios when new. I wanted a VHF Saber when the SC Dept of Natural Resources got them right up until the local shop quoted one to me. Talk about sticker shock!

I guess I'm not all that familiar with any other Motorolas, other than the HT1250, the HT1000, the MT 1000 and the MT1500.

I'm carrying the HT1250 because of its size, scan list, and alpha tags. I previously carried an MT1000, and absolutely loved it. However, it is too big, only scans 8, and doesn't have alpha tags. It now resides in a MVA in my vehicle.

I'm able to receive with the 1250 about as well as I can with the MT1000, but the audio quality is not the same as the MT1000. Range seems to be about the same to me.

Like I said; my only beef with the HT1250 is the adjacent channel rejection. Nearby freqs bleed over on my priority, so it beeps and jumps to the priority, when no activity is on the priority channel. Vey annoying. My cheap scanners don't even do that!

Any of you Moto guys have any suggestions for attenuating that crap?

My EX600XLS always pulled that crap and I never could fix it... I ended up selling the radio.
