I guess I'll have to go to Icom's website to check this one out. I have been thinking I need a new radio. I see you have a collection of icom radios "jonny290". I have always been an Icom man myself. I, too don't "feel the need" for D-star.

I gave the '2500 receiver serious consideration until I discovered it has serious frequency and P-25 shortcomings. Not to mention the price tag !

Very nice looking radio. I wonder how well the "diversity reception" function will work, could be a dream come true - could be a nightmare.

Agreed - I fully support diversity reception in ham rigs, I hope they do this one well.

The only P25 around here is the state police network and my 396 scans that; I really want an R1500 just because it matches my 208H body style, heh.

Can only imagine if the 2m/440 radio like the 208 is going for around $630, what the 2820 will sell for. I have the 2720 and have no intermod on it. I live in a RF rich environment.

err...The 208H is 309.00 on ebay and they're $275.00 right now at Universal Radio. I paid 175 for a lightly used scratch n dent 208 off ebay.

Maybe you're thinking of the ID-800? That's pricey but has d-star from the factory.

Be aware that this will NOT come default with D-Star capability - that will be a $150 addon. Based on that I believe the 2820H will hit retail markets at the $349 or $369 price point.

I am keeping my eye on this as well. I have a 2720 and have no intermod problem at all and it gets a good work out every day in many different environments from rural to Chicago urban and not a lick of problems. I would like the2820 for the shack to free up the 706MK2G for HF work.

I use P25 on public safety and have several two meter frequencies programmed in P25 in our VHF radios, but I needed to replace two ham mobiles in emergency management vehicles. I looked at the options (not impressed at all with any of the recent hammie mobiles - same ol' crap) and someone I was corresponding with planted the seed to try D-STAR. So, I picked up two ID-800 mobiles. They were direct replacements to the now buggy Yaesu mobiles that were in the vehicles.

First time out, we talked car to car for 25 miles (which we can also do in P25). The audio quality in D-STAR was a little mellower than that of P25 (from EFJ mobiles). The EOM beep was interesting, although it would probably get annoying. Side by side between analog and digital, the signal was very noisy in analog and still mostly 3.0 DAQ. And, no, Can't decode P25 nor can P25 decode D-STAR. No matter. At least I won't be asking for talk-in to the hamfest on dispatch.

Frankly, I'm surprised it worked! Nobody else uses it here... yet (nor may they ever due to only pockets of very localized 2 meter and 440 activity), but it's interesting. I've been told that the modulation bandwidth is less than P25 and that it is actually 6.25 kHz equivalent. (read: I want to hate it, but I can't - it does everything it says it does.)

Next is making a cable for GPS interface and seeing if I can poor-man up an AVL system.

902, an AVL is easy to setup. Just download the D-PRS Interface from http://www.aprs-is.net/downloads/dstar/DPRSInterface.zip and connect an APRS client, just as you would connect to an APRS Internet Server. You will need to enter a checksum in your TX Message field. You can calculate that at http://www.aprs-is.net/dprscalc.htm

BTW, as public safety agencies are required to change to narrower emissions, the FCC will reassign a 25 kHz channel with a 12.5 kHz channel. However, it that agency chooses to use a 6.25 kHz channel instead, then the FCC will grant three 6.25 kHz channels for every one 25 kHz channel previously in use. So Icom has a commercialized version of D-STAR available. Althought they don't have repeaters and such available yet, they do have a couple of handhelds with the digital capability, so the newer 6.25 kHz channels can be put into use.
