So, I dropped the head unit of my 5100, one of the main dial knobs broke off. Examination says that the knob is fine, it's the shaft that's broken in half. Extraction of the bottom half of this shaft seems impossible. Are those crimped in the encoder? Is there a way to fix this without tearing the unit down to the main board and removing the encoder to replace? I don't find any teardowns on the nets, so I'm a little afraid there's hidden catches and stubs that I'll break if I just start taking it apart.
Unit still works great, encoder functions if you turn it, just no knob so it's hard to use it. Worth fixing but not paying the icom repair fee I think.
Thoughts?
