I work for a communication test equipment manufacturer. We have dozens of portable and mobile radios representing most digital protocols and manufacturers. I was like a kid in a candy store when I started here. Sure, I'd love to have them to play with but in reality, they are a bit of overkill for Amateur use. And if I recall correctly, they are specified for occupational use?Go Kenwood -- Their NX-5000 Series. You'll get P25, NXDN, and DMR all in 1 mono band package. However you can only use 2 digital modes at a time.
If hams new how much cost effective gear was sitting out there on the cost effective market...
I could be wrong, but "cost" saving may not be enough motivation, because you still have to know someone to program the radio or spend big bucks on the software? Also why carry a bulky LMR radio when the Amateur version is generally smaller and lighter?
Aside from all the bells and whistles in the P25 standard both Yaesu Fusion and P-25 Phase1 are FDMA. Wouldn't they perform about the same? So why use P-25 unless you also use it on your job or as a Volunteer firefighter? I don't know if YSF has nearly as much error correction though.
