• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I'm wondering...

How do you all group ID's for the different trunked systems you listen to?

Do you prefer to group by location within the system? By function (sheriff, emergency, etc..)? Do you put a bunch of general things together (like all of dispatch in one group list)?

No right or wrong, just curious if anyone has any interesting/creative methods for setting things up?

I'm here a lot
Usually group first by geographical sectors of the system .(North , West ... etc)
So all Police ,FD and EMS for that sector would be in separate scan lists for that bank.
Things usually get dispatched by police first, around here. After that I'll decide which lists to activate/de-activate in order to concentrate on an incident.

I see you have a Pro 2052 , does the 5 X 10 scan list limit you per bank ?
In my area , the police alone pretty much can fill up 50 TG spaces.

mciupa,

Nope, the 5 X 10 doesn't limit me too much.
I'm on an Edacs system. Since the 2052 doesn't have text tags, I can just throw in the first to digits of the AFS. All of the Sheriff TGs on my system are 04-XYZ. Emergency services 12-XYZ. So, 50 is plenty for the way I have this system set up.
However on my 97, with text tags I actually use 3 (6 really, but 3 daily, 3 setup for special circumstance) banks all set up differently so I can pick out what I want.

Also, the 2052 is connected to the computer all of the time. Changes can be made to it with a simple load, so no real issues there.

The Sacramento trunking system has Sacramento City PD, Sacramento County Sheriff, City Fire, Metro (county) Fire, and several local police departments in addition to public works, etc. The PRO-95 only allows 100 IDs, grouped as 5 sets of 20 IDs. So I can't put them all into one scanner (without using multiple banks).

During the daylight hours, there is SO much traffic I have to turn something off. Since I live in the county, the City PD is the first to go. I pretty much always want to hear the fire departments. Next to go is some of the PDs which are not near.

So I've grouped the PD channels together into the first subgroup so it can be turned off during the day. The next group is all of the remaining PD or sheriff channels. The latter groups are all Fire, and I rarely turn off those groups.

How about you? How do you group IDs?

I have Pasco County EDACS in my scanner right now.
On my 2052 I can just put in the first two digits of the AFS. In list one I have Pasco County Sheriff (all 04-XYZ). In list 2 I keep the two local city PD's. I'm just on the edge of their jurisdiction, so interesting things happen there from time to time. Bank three and four are all of the fire in the county. This county has a bunch of talk groups set for "disaster" and that is list 5. I omit most of the other cities that aren't close to me, but I do have a few other options on the computer ready to dump onto the 2052 if things get crazy and ther is an area I need to hear.

On the 97 I have 6 banks programmed with the same system. Each one has lists setup differently for geographic ares I find myself in a bit. One bank is set for open talk groups. It just receives whatever talk group. On a very slow afternoon I'll kick over to that bank and hear about pipe repairs, stray dogs and personal conversations.
