So on that map it gives the location and frequency for that given tower.

I click on it and it gives me 6 different towers I guess conected to that main tower.

I just enter that one tower that close to my area will I just hear district 18 or other districts.

Or will I hear others as well.

I don't know if that makes sense.

Those six towers are the "neighbors" but you only need one. I guess I'd call it a District-wide communications network since they only lease bandwidth or however it works on the towers they actually need for communications. Wouldn't serve a purpose for District 1 to be statewide or any other District. Flooding towers with excess traffic isn't good. Some talkgroups are statewide, others are not. You say you're in Jerseyville? Since you're in D18, add the control channel(s), add the relevant talkgroups, and you're good to go. You'll also be able to listen to D11 traffic, or should since D11 dispatches D18 now so there'll be a patch for dispatch purposes. Put it in "STAT" (stationary) mode rather than "ROAM" if you're only monitoring a single site.

I have to admit, learning this system is very...tedious and extremely confusing at first. Especially coming from analog background with no experience with digital. For me, at least.

This is why I would suggest picking up a programming cable at the very least. You can use the trial run for PSREdit or Win500 to program the scanner and Pro96com to monitor different sites to find what you're looking for, program in any updates manually if you don't wanna pay for the software when trial is up. Pro96com will pick up all voice and data traffic off the tower, not just the talkgroup(s) programmed into the scanner.

Your tower Frq. is fine if it's working for you.
Now make sure your set to "scan" not search.
Enter the D18 talk groups I posted for you.
When your radio is in scan mode it will only receive the TG you enter.

I'm guessing there's no way to listen to just district 18 when there around my area.

And I use a pro 197scanner I have live audio feed. I changed scanners and now it sounds bad any ideas to make it clear. I hear others live feed and you don't hear anything till they talk. Others are all static why is that. Sorry off subject

What would be the right tower for my area. Do you know?
Like I said I'd like just 18 but I'm sure I'd have to have 11 since they dispatch them as well.

And I only hear bits and pieces at this time. I'd like to be able to hear the whole call or majority of it say a crash etc.

If you have the talkgroups programmed in correctly then you shouldn't be hearing Springfield at all.

As for towers, you gotta figure out where you are in relation to the counties where there are sites since none are in Jersey County. Are you closer to Calhoun County or Macoupin County? Try sites 306, 307, and 356, those are the closest to Jersey County. I would even use all and program every control channel, set it to ROAM and the decode threshold of....mine is set 10 (low), 70 (high). You'll hear dispatch address the D18 units as Collinsville 18-X and the (actual) Collinsville units as Collinsville 11-X, X being car number and the mobile radios in the cars never seem to change between actual troopers since they take their squads home at end of shift. I've seen the same troopers, same car numbers, same radio IDs for mobile and portable radios, for a year or more.

I am closer to Calhoun I would say then Macoupin.

I think your getting confused with talk group, control frequency.
Talk group is not a frequency.
Control channel is.

Set up a bank
Add the tower control channels skinntb82 gave you
Add the Talk groups for D18 only I posted.
Enable only that bank.
Set radio to scan.

Add the blue ones too.

"You say talk group you have me just so I am clear that a the control channel that are red."

The tower control frqz. enables the system you want.
You enter the talk group number to enable the department(agency) you want to hear.
Like in the old days when you would enter each agency's radio frequency, now you enter the assigned talk
Group.

The easier to read manuals as mentioned earlier are your best option to the manual.
You need to keep reading them until you understand the new way of programing and how the
Radio works.

The talk group number would be blue or all the other frequencies ?

And I do need to add all the frequencies in the tower list.

Neither.
The talk groups I listed for you in post 14 of this thread.
Please do some more reading or video watching.
Hopefully you will finally get it.

Not much more I can do
