Being new to the scanner hobby I'm totally blown away with what our police have to deal with everyday.

I've always looked at them as being traffic enforcers for revenue. Now that I've listened to their daily activities and have seen what they have to deal with on a daily basis I have a new found respect.

Not only do they deal with the trash of our society, they get called to family fights, they check on the elderly, they interlude in almost every thing that isn't perfect in our lives.

I have a whole new perspective and respect for our police.

Yep. I've always thought that most law abiding taxpayers should listen to the police at work at least for a day or two. Welcome to the hobby.

Which is one of the positive arguments for not encrypting everything. It's typical human nature to be suspicious of something that is secret. The very opposite result could be obtained by keeping things open, as witnessed by what you have observed.

Or how about fire? Imagine being asleep in your home at 2am, or dozing off in front of the TV... Then all of the sudden you have to jump in your car, and run out to some grizzly nightmare of a car wreck... Clean all that up, then go back home and try to go to sleep like nothing happened. That's the life of a fire person.

Yep. Amazing range they have to cover.

My all time galling call was the Boulder County Sheriff's Deputy called out for "3 year old child out of control."

Now THAT's what every deputy dreams of responding to......

While the 3 yr old child is something that a parent should be able to handle, things can get out of hand quickly when the stress of dealing with one takes over. When times get bad enough to think about calling 911 it may be best to have the Sheriff come by and help restore order. That's a whole lot better than the stressed and frustrated adult beating the child to death when things get beyond the point of reason for that adult and they snap for a split second and do the unthinkable.

The officer (and their backup, of course) should be able to easily calm both the child and adult. The adult by giving them a brief break from the situation and some counseling from one officer while the child is calmly talked to by the other officer. It also may help flag households where CPS intervention and monitoring may be necessary if the calls happen more than once or twice.
