Hi everyone,
I am just your average guy who enjoys listen to anything and everything out there in radio land. Wether it's am radio, shortwave, ham, scanner,,,,if it's out there, I'll listen. Years ago before technology is where it is at now, I'll admit I even did my fair share of ( accidently of course ) stumbling across a few cordless phone call conversations. Every now and then, my daughter, who at the time was a teenager, saw and heard what could be heard over the airwaves when you talk on a cordless phone. She vowed never ever to own one of those things,, lol,,, Well, like most of us nowadays, she has given in to technology pressure and bought herself this Uniden 2.4 GHz phone.
http://www.uniden.com/products/productdetail.cfm?product=EXAI4248i

She has suspected for awhile now that her conversations are being ( listened in on ) by a 14 yr old boy in the neighborhood. I told her naaaa, no way,, it's your imagination. Btw, the 14 yr old is the son of my daughters friend. So we kinda set up this trap. I called her, we talked about everyday things and then I said hey, I was kinda thinking of asking _____ if he would like to help me get the yard cleaned up as soon as the weather breaks. I told her that it'll be a few weeks yet but I was just curious if she thought ______ might be interested. She said she didnt know, but next time she sees him, she will ask. Sooooooo, the bait has now been set. A couple days go by, she sees him on a number of occasions, never mentions anything to him about what we had discussed. Finally after day 3 of her not saying anything, he starts making comments about how he really wishes he had a part time job that he could make some money. A few more days pass and he is continually making comments about how he wishes he was old enough to work. He says " I could do yard work and stuff like that, if only I could find someone that would hire me,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

I realize this is not concrete proof, however it really does make ya wonder,,,,,,,,,,

Is it possible that this 14 yr old kid is listening in on her phone calls ? And if he is, what the heck is he using ?

I'm confused lol
Thanks

Do you see any outside antennas on his house, other than over the air tv? Could his parent(s) hobbies/interests include scanning? How about suspicious antennas on any vehicles parked at his residence? Are any of his friends/relatives in any of the emergency services? Yes, it MAY be possible that he has access to a means of listening, and is doing so. More investigation (on the sly) may be in order. Do any of his relatives or friends work at Radio Shack? No need to asnwer the questions here, just food for thought.

I would say yes it is a possibility, since that model phone does not seem to be a digital model phone. Just being 2.4gHz doesn't mean it's digital. If she wants a secure cordless, I would seriously look into a digital model.

And as previously stated somewhere on here, not all of those 2.4 GHz phones operate at 2.4 GHz. Some operate in the 800 and 900 MHz range. If that's the case, that kid could easily listen to the conversation.

It's hard to tell with that phone. Uniden, like so many others, no longer publish any technical specifications of their products (at least not in their normal advertising).

Some of the higher quality more expensive phones in the 2.4GHz band are digital, or using spread-spectrum technology, which would mean your average scanner radio snoop will not be able to monitor them. The fact that Uniden does not mention either of these technologies is a good indication that is uses neither of them.

Even with a high-end communications receiver like the Icom IC-R7000, you would not be able to monitor 2.4GHz digital, or spread-spectrum phones. This is not to say they can't be monitored under any circumstances, but it would require very expensive equipment out of the reach of most individuals.

My XYL thought I was nuts when I insisted using a corded phone when giving credit card #'s and such on the phone. I told her that I wasn't comfortable with cordless phones unless we got a digital spread spectrum unit. We did get one finally, now I'm comfortable.

Still have a corded phone in case of power failures.

You mentioned her phone being a 2.4 gig model; the frequency coverage on the 898 only goes up to 956MHz.

Many phones marked 2.4 and 5.8 still use the the 900 mhz and some even 400 mhz areas, Kinda odd. There is a list of models on that tells which ones do this. I will look for it.
