Well I have to say that my new ICOM V82 HT is one heck of a scanner! While outside digging a footer for a new garage I was listening to the HT which has some fire and police frequencies in it and was surprised when I heard Ehrlinger Dispatch and mobiles from Ohio and then Elkhart City Fire as well down here in Hancock Co. I also picked up Pulaski Co. and some others I couldn't pick out who they were. I was kind of surprised, first because this is an HT and second it was using the factory antenna that came with it, not one on a tower.

I got a chuckle when I heard an FD called Miracle Fire company yesterday morning. Must be a miracle anyone showed up. They toned out at least 4 times. Tropospheric skip was quite good in our area. Many times during the day our regular FD dispatch would be switching from one tower to another to block out distant stations.
I was picking out East Coast and Southern states depts. up until 12:00noon.
