I was listening to WHRI on 9860khz this evening and was pleasantly surprised to hear the announcement that they are broadcasting the Indianapolis 500 *LIVE* this Sunday at 1500z on 15,180khz !
As a kid, I remember listening to the race on AM radio while out fishing in the middle of a lake in northern Wisconsin. So cool to essentially be in the middle of nowhere and hear the call: "Gentlemen ... start your engines!" and "Rick ... take them through turn three!".
WHRI has a very potent signal, so it should be no problem hearing them with a simple shortwave portable.
If you do listen to their broadcast, be sure to send them an email after thanking them.
Shortwave radio rocks.
