Is there a good way to tell the GRE-600 that I want both the internal and external speakers active? When I plug in the external speaker (line to PC for recording), it cuts the internal speaker. But since there are so many other unexplored options on here, was hoping that was something else I had missed. :-D

Also, can I set the rear jack as Line out rather than speaker?

No, that's a mechanical switch in the headphone jack. When you push the plug into the jack it automatically disconnects the internal speaker. In addition, I believe the headphone out jack is a lower level specific for headphones. Don't know how well it'll do for an external speaker.

600 speaker line out

I don't "THINK" you can unless you can figure out a way of splitting it before it gets to the internal speaker. I like your avatar. Are you by any chance a ex AIR police, Security Policeman. I was an Air Policeman in the 60's. Sac Trained Killer.

The patch on the beret is a Crest from the Air Police from back then. We were the first Air police to wear a beret. 1041st Combat Security Police and the 821st Combat Security Police. 1967-73 time frame.

I ran into the same problem when using a logging program. I got around it by using a splitter on the external speaker cable from the scanner. One end goes to the PC mic input and the other to a Radio Shack mini-amp-speaker. (Catalog 27-1008C) This unit has a volume control so you can turn it up to a suitable hearing level. You just about have to use an amplified speaker since the PC input audio level has to be set so low.

That's why this scanner really needs a "rec out" (line level) jack, Jack. It would cost very little in production to add the feature, and would incrementally increase its marketability.

That would sure solve a lot of problems people have with this model. For being the "flag ship" model of the time I'm surprised GRE didn't at least incorporate a simple jack such as this into the PSR-600/Pro-197. Such an expensive scanner (at the time) should have had a simple feature like this :(

I've included a rather generic method of adding a fixed volume line out jack to your scanner. While this would be easier to nicely implement in a base station model of radio it could be done to a handheld if you have the real estate or just want to route a thin audio coax cable out of a convenient orfice with the jack on the end.

Several notes on the implementation. This a fixed audio output and will not be influenced by the volume control setting. Insure you tap into the VC at the hot end of it. It should be fairly easy to locate that connect point by looking at the volume control rotation. Turn the knob all the way up and the side tap it's rotating toward is the hot side. Also, find a coax ground close by the volume control. It should be ground on the opposite connection to the hot side you just found.

This modification may void your warranty and does imply some level of electronics skill and knowledge as well as soldering skills at the PC board level. No warranty or responsibility is implied by me.

Feel free to ask questions if interested.
